Asylum Access, an international refugee human rights organization, seeks a highly-qualified Communications and Development Assistant to support our global fundraising, marketing and policy advocacy efforts.?

?

The Communications and Development Assistant position is based in Quito, Ecuador, but supports Asylum Access headquarters in San Francisco, and works closely with our global team across four continents.?



Position Description

?

The Communications and Development Assistant (CDA) is an ideal opportunity for a bright, highly-organized college graduate with new media fluency, verbal and visual creativity, and strong problem-solving and communication skills.?

?

The CDA will work directly with Asylum Access?s Communications and Development Coordinator and Executive Director to support leadership staff in developing and implementing strategies to communicate with individual, foundation, and corporate donors and prospective donors. The CDA will also assist Asylum Access?s policy and operations staff with public communications as necessary.?

?

Working closely with the Communications and Development Coordinator, the CDA will correspond and maintain relationships with key individuals and institutions that support refugee human rights.? The CDA will also be responsible for researching and qualifying prospective supporters, both individual and institutional, and for supporting senior development staff with grant-writing and donor outreach.? The CDA will have primary responsibility for incorporating new media into Asylum Access?s communications.?

The CDA will learn first-hand about the challenges and opportunities of global human rights advocacy, and will be on the cutting edge of developing new media strategies to turn human rights from paper promises into daily reality for some of the world?s most vulnerable people: 16 million refugees.?

Key Responsibilities

  1. Public Communications: Primary responsibility for developing quarterly e-newsletter, including content, layout and dissemination.? Primary responsibility for website content and delivery and for dissemination of information via Facebook, Twitter, and other communications technologies. Leads collection of communications materials from overseas offices and monitors website traffic.

  1. New Media: Develop and implement strategy to incorporate new media into public communications.? Script, shoot, edit and produce video to communicate Asylum Access?s work, or recruit and manage volunteers to fill these roles.? Identify areas where Asylum Access could effectively utilize new media in fundraising, staff training, policy advocacy and elsewhere to better achieve its human rights objectives.?

  1. Institutional Donor Relationships: Maintain relationships with current institutional funders through regular communication and reports.? Research and qualify prospective institutional funders.? Assist senior development staff in drafting proposals and preparing submissions to grantmaking organizations.

  1. Individual Donor Relationships: Maintain relationships with current individual donors through regular communication and prompt acknowledgment of gifts.? Research and qualify prospective individual donors.? Assist senior development staff in outreach to prospective donors via post/email and telephone.?

  1. Public Outreach: Identify, secure, and manage speaking engagements for Asylum Access leadership. Build relationships with media outlets and increase media attention for Asylum Access.

  • Superlative written and verbal communication skills
  • Comfortable taking initiative; proven ability to take a project from idea to implementation
  • Impeccable attention to detail
  • Native fluency in English; proficiency in Spanish
  • Experience communicating with the public in a real-world context
  • Graphic design training and/or experience
  • Video production experience
  • Training and/or experience in branding, marketing, messaging and communications
  • Comfortable with online research
  • Fluent user of YouTube, Facebook, and other social media
  • Enthusiastic about making human rights a reality
  • Creative and effective problem-solver
  • High degree of professionalism
  • Bachelor?s degree or equivalent
  • High proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint) and Google Docs; familiarity with Salesforce a plus
  • Able to make a commitment of at least one year (2-year commitment preferred)
