Rutgers-Tulane game on at Superdome as scheduled

The Rutgers-Tulane football game will be played Saturday night in the Superdome, only days after Isaac swept across the New Orleans area with hurricane-force winds.

"We have concluded it is not only appropriate to move ahead with this event but essential to show the nation the resolve and resiliency of our community when faced with enormous adversity," Tulane athletic director Rick Dickson said Thursday.

The Superdome sustained only superficial damage to surrounding signs, banners and landscaping.

Doug Thornton, an executive with SMG, the company that manages the state-owned Superdome, said the stadium never lost power and its roof never leaked. He noted key Superdome personnel were returning to work Thursday to get the stadium ready to host college football.

Although the dome was in good shape Wednesday night, Tulane officials waited on a final decision to play until evaluating the condition of the community and confirming the airport would be ready for Rutgers' charter flight on Friday.

Louis Armstrong International Airport lost power during the storm, which came ashore Tuesday night and lingered in south Louisiana as both a hurricane, then later as a tropical storm, throughout Wednesday. The airport also was closed to commercial air traffic on Thursday.

On Thursday morning, Dickson consulted with officials from the city, the Superdome, Rutgers and the CBS Sports Network, which will televise the game nationally.

The Tulane football team left New Orleans for Birmingham, Ala., on Monday and practiced at Samford. The team planned to practice there again Thursday and Friday morning before returning to New Orleans.

The game will mark the end of an eventful first week of the regular season for new Tulane head coach Curtis Johnson, who is used to such weather-related disruptions. Johnson grew up in the New Orleans area and spent the past six seasons as wide receivers coach for the New Orleans Saints.

He joined the Saints the season after Hurricane Katrina hit. He was with the team when they left their suburban New Orleans headquarters and practiced in Indianapolis during Week 1 of the 2008 season while Hurricane Gustav came ashore in south Louisiana.

Isaac has impacted other Louisiana teams.

It caused the postponement of Thursday night's game in Shreveport between Texas A&M and Louisiana Tech. That game was called off on Tuesday, hours before the storm made landfall, and was rescheduled for Oct. 13, when both teams had an open date.

Also, Nicholls State ? located in Thibodaux, about 60 miles southwest of New Orleans ? has postponed its season opening trip to Oregon State this weekend. The team was scheduled to fly out of New Orleans on Friday for the contest in Corvallis. Officials are working on rescheduling the game.

LSU officials consulted with authorities and examined facilities throughout the day Thursday before deciding that the No. 3 Tigers would indeed be able to host their season opener as scheduled on Saturday night against North Texas.

(AP) ? Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush says President Barack Obama should stop blaming his brother, former President George W. Bush, for the country's economic woes.

Bush said a real leader would accept responsibility for his own policies.

Bush told the GOP convention Thursday night that his brother is a man of integrity, courage and honor.

The former president is a convention no-show. Republicans aired a short tribute video to George W. Bush, but they have barely mentioned him.

Polls show many voters still blame George W. Bush for the nation's sputtering economy. Democrats have tried to tie GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney to Bush, charging that Romney would restore many of the former president's policies if elected.

Jeb Bush left office in 2007 and remains influential in Florida and GOP politics.

Police: 100-year-old driver hits 11 near LA school

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? A 100-year-old man backed his car on to a sidewalk and hit 11 people, including nine children, across from an elementary school in South Los Angeles just after classes had ended Wednesday, authorities said.

Four of the children were in critical condition when firefighters arrived but they were stabilized and were in serious condition at a hospital, city fire Capt. Jaime Moore said. Everyone was expected to survive, he said.

Some of the victims were trapped under the powder blue Cadillac before witnesses helped pull them out, Moore said. Helicopter footage from NBC4 showed a child in a pink T-shirt being loaded into an ambulance and a Hello Kitty backpack lying in the street nearby.

Police identified the driver as Preston Carter and said he was being very cooperative.

Carter talked to television reporters just after the crash, saying he has a license and will be 101 years old Sept. 5.

"My brakes failed, it was out of control," Carter told KCAL-TV.

Asked about hitting the children, Preston said: "You know I'm sorry about that. I wouldn't do that for nothing on earth. My sympathies for them."

After an initial investigation, it appears Carter was pulling out of a parking space, but instead of backing into the street, he backed onto the sidewalk, police Capt. George Rodriguez said. The car hit a group of people who were gathered to buy snacks from a street vendor, Rodriguez said.

"I think it was a miscalculation on his part, the gentleman is elderly," said Rodriguez, who added there is no age limit for having a driver's license in California. "Obviously he is going to have some impairment on his decision making."

Older drivers have been involved in other tragedies. In 2003, an 86-year-old man mistakenly stepped on the gas pedal of his car instead of the brake and then panicked, plowing into an open-air market in Santa Monica. Ten people were killed and 63 injured.

According to California's Department of Motor Vehicles, people over age 70 must renew their driver's license in person, rather than via the Internet or by mail. Older drivers can also be required to take a supplemental driving test if they fail a vision exam, or if a police officer, a physician, or a family member raises questions about their ability.

Rodriguez said the collision was being investigated as an accident, and Carter was not under arrest. He has a valid driver's license, Rodriguez said.

Carter's Cadillac still sat draped in police tape on the sidewalk across from Main Street Elementary more than two hours after crash. The school is about five miles southwest of downtown Los Angeles.

About 130 students remained on campus in afterschool programs, and their parents were being called to pick them up early, said Rowena LaGrosa, an operations manager for the Los Angeles Unified School District.

Collagen-seeking synthetic protein could lead doctors to tumor locations

ScienceDaily (Aug. 29, 2012) ? Johns Hopkins researchers have created a synthetic protein that, when activated by ultraviolet light, can guide doctors to places within the body where cancer, arthritis and other serious medical disorders can be detected.

The technique could lead to a new type of diagnostic imaging technology and may someday serve as a way to move medications to parts of the body where signs of disease have been found. In a study published in the Aug. 27-31 Online Early Edition of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the researchers reported success in using the synthetic protein in mouse models to locate prostate and pancreatic cancers, as well as to detect abnormal bone growth activity associated with Marfan syndrome.

The synthetic protein developed by the Johns Hopkins team does not zero in directly on the diseased cells. Instead, it binds to nearby collagen that has been degraded by various health disorders. Collagen, the body's most abundant protein, provides structure and creates a sturdy framework upon which cells build nerves, bone and skin. Some buildup and degradation of collagen is normal, but disease cells such as cancer can send out enzymes that break down collagen at an accelerated pace. It is this excessive damage, caused by disease, that the new synthetic protein can detect, the researchers said.

"These disease cells are like burglars who break into a house and do lots of damage but who are not there when the police arrive," said S. Michael Yu, a faculty member in the Whiting School of Engineering's Department of Materials Science and Engineering. "Instead of looking for the burglars, our synthetic protein is reacting to evidence left at the scene of the crime," said Yu, who was principal investigator in the study.

A key collaborator was Martin Pomper, a School of Medicine professor of radiology and co-principal investigator of the Johns Hopkins Center of Cancer Nanotechnology Excellence. Pomper and Yu met as fellow affiliates of the Johns Hopkins Institute for NanoBioTechnology. "A major unmet medical need is for a better non-invasive characterization of disrupted collagen, which occurs in a wide variety of disorders," Pomper said. "Michael has found what could be a very elegant and practical solution, which we are converting into a suite of imaging and potential agents for diagnosis and treatment."

The synthetic proteins used in the study are called collagen mimetic peptides or CMPs. These tiny bits of protein are attracted to and physically bind to degraded strands of collagen, particularly those damaged by disease. Fluorescent tags are placed on each CMP so that it will show up when doctors scan tissue with fluorescent imaging equipment. The glowing areas indicate the location of damaged collagen that is likely to be associated with disease.

In developing the technique, the researchers faced a challenge because CMPs tend to bind with one another and form their own structures, similar to DNA, in a way that would cause them to ignore the disease-linked collagen targeted by the researchers.

To remedy this, the study's lead author, Yang Li, synthesized CMPs that possess a chemical "cage" to keep the proteins from binding with one another. Just prior to entering the bloodstream to search for damaged collagen, a powerful ultraviolet light is used to "unlock" the cage and allow the CMPs to initiate their disease-tracking mission. Li is a doctoral student from the Department of Chemistry in the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences at Johns Hopkins. Yu, who holds a joint appointment in that department, is his doctoral adviser.

Yu's team tested Li's fluorescently tagged and caged peptides by injecting them into lab mice that possessed both prostate and pancreatic human cancer cells. Through a series of fluorescent images taken over four days, researchers tracked single strands of the synthetic protein spreading throughout the tumor sites via blood vessels and binding to collagen that had been damaged by cancer.

Similar in vivo tests showed that the CMP can target bones and cartilage that contain large amounts of degraded collagen. Therefore, the new protein could be used for diagnosis and treatment related to bone and cartilage damage.

Although the process is not well understood, the breakdown and rebuilding of collagen is thought to play a role in the excessive bone growth found in patients with Marfan syndrome. Yu's team tested their CMPs on a mouse model for this disease and saw increased CMP binding in the ribs and spines of the Marfan mice, as compared to the control mice.

Funding for the research was provided by the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health and the Department of Defense. The synthetic protein process used in this research is protected by patents obtained through the Johns Hopkins Technology Transfer Office.

Along with Yu, Li and Pomper, co-authors of this study were instructor Catherine A. Foss and medical resident Collin M. Torok from the Department of Radiology and Radiological Science at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine; Harry C. Dietz, a professor, and Jefferson J. Doyle, a doctoral student, both of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and Institute of Genetic Medicine at the School of Medicine; and Daniel D. Summerfield a former master's student in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering.

Academic and Creative Writing Journal Vikram Karve: A HAPPY - Yes

A HAPPY DEATH

From my Creative Writing Archives:

Here is a fiction short story I wrote last year, on a day the stock market was fluctuating wildly. Do tell me if you liked the story.

He was not a Bull.?

He was not a Bear.?

He was a Punter.?

Yes, that?s we nicknamed him: ?Punter?.

He did not bother about gobbledygook like fundamentals or technicals.?

He did not have an inkling of financial algorithms and risk heuristics and never ?analyzed? ? he just speculated by sheer gut feeling.

He instinctively knew how to time the market.?

That?s why he always made money, whether the stock market boomed or crashed. He had made so much money that he could have retired and enjoyed a luxurious lifestyle, but then, he had got addicted to making money by playing the stock market.

Yes, he got a kick out of ?making? money rather than ?enjoying? his money.?

So despite his advancing years he kept on playing the market with more and more vigor and continued to make more and more money.?

Earlier he would spend his entire time in the ring at the Stock Exchange on?Dalal Street.?

Now he would sit all day, all stressed up, in his room, glued to his TV, flipping all the financial channels, his fingers on his laptop for instant online trading via the internet.?

He had no interests, no hobbies, no pleasures, no loves ? he just enjoyed one thing ? playing the stock market and making money.?

One day his lifestyle took its toll and he had a heart attack.?

They rushed him to the best hospital in Mumbai and they all said he would require a bypass surgery.?

So they admitted him to the best room in the hospital.?

Instead of relaxing there, he sat whole day watching the stock-market channels on the wall-mounted TV, doing feverish online trading on his laptop and he continued making a lot a money and he was very happy. But the doctors were not happy and said that all this share-market business was causing him a lot of excitement which was not good for his already erratic heart, so one morning they suddenly removed the TV and the laptop and even banned all visitors except me and his son, who was a successful investment banker. ?Total rest,? the doctors warned all of us, ?he needs total rest, both mental and physical, and only then will he be able to stabilize and be ready for the surgery.?

It was the first time he had to suffer a day of total rest isolated from the outside world and it was the worst day of his life.?

The entire morning he kept asking about stock prices and asked me for my cell-phone to connect up and find out, but I refused since we were told to strictly isolate him from that world.?

I could realize that he was passing though hell, unimaginable mental agony at not getting information about the very thing that had been his bread and butter, even the?raison d'etre?of his existence. After lunch he dozed off, and then he suddenly he woke up and asked me, ?What is the time?? ?Good. There is still time. I want to speak to my son.? ?He is coming at 4...? ?No. I want to speak to him now. It is urgent.? ?He?ll be busy now, in his office?? ?I told you it is urgent. Just get him on the phone?? he said excitedly, his breathing getting heavy.

?Okay. Okay. Calm down,? I said.?

I dialed his son?s mobile number, and when the son came on line, I asked him to speak to his father. ?Sell all shares,? the man shouted at his son via the mobile phone. ?What?? I could hear his son?s surprised voice. ?Don?t ask any questions. Just do what I say. Sell all my shares, understand, all my shares, everything. Do it now. Today. Before the closing bell. Sell everything online. Right now. You know the user id and?password of my account, don't you...? ?Okay, Papa,? I could hear his son?s voice before he disconnected. He kept on pestering me to ring up his son and confirm, so I rang up his son half an hour later. ?Yes, Papa, I have sold all the shares in online trading,? the son confirmed. The old man seemed tremendously relieved and went to sleep peacefully.

That night, at home, sitting before my TV set, I watched with concern as all the share-market experts on the financial channels predicted that the market was very solid and bullish and recommended that everyone buy shares as the market was going to go up and up.?

?Invest ... Invest ... Invest ... Buy ... Buy ... Buy ...??all the experts said in unison.?

The market was at an all time high but things were looking so good that it was going to rise phenomenally and your investment would probably double in a few months, all the experts predicted. They kept quoting analysis in jargon I never understood to substantiate their predictions.

Next morning the stock-market crashed.?

It was the biggest fall ever in the history of the share-market.?

Most investors were wiped out.?

Everyone incurred big losses. Except the old man and me.

Did I say: ?The old man and?me???

Dear Reader, you?re surprised, aren?t you??

Let me tell you what I did.?

The moment the Punter had finished speaking to his son, I went outside the room and I called up my broker and told him to immediately sell off all my shares.

The Punter had made a huge profit and, as always, along with him, I too had made a small fortune.?

As always, I had blindly followed the Punter and, as always, I had profited by blindly imitating whatever he did in the stock market. The moment he heard the news (from a careless nurse who told the old man that the hospital was abuzz with news of the stock-market crash) the Punter got so excited that he almost went crazy with excitement and happiness. The frenzy of ecstasy caused his blood pressure to go haywire, his heartbeats ran amok, and suddenly, he collapsed and died. I gave a condolence speech at the old man?s funeral in which I praised him profusely and told everyone how I had made a fortune in the stock-market by just following him blindly.

Later,?the old man?s?son took me aside and asked me, ?Did you really sell all your shares??

?Yes,? I said, ?I had blind faith in your father.? ?I wish I had blind faith in his mysterious ways. But I am an investment banker. I don?t go by gut instinct, like my father did. I analyze things. I never imagined the stock market would crash so badly. In fact I thought the market would go up and it would be foolish to sell such excellent blue chip shares. So, I never sold those shares. I am big fool. Had I listened to him and sold all the shares I would have made a big fortune. But I did not sell those shares,? said the young man, with a tone of regret in his voice. ?You never sold the shares??? ?Then why did you lie to him?? ?Because I wanted him to die happy. I lied to my father because I wanted my father to die a happy death.?

Parenting Tips: Establishing Consequences with Bite - Matt Townsend

Hey Friends, ? ?

Nothing is more frustrating as a parent than knowing that your children aren?t taking you or your disciplining approach seriously. ?Like a cat with a cornered mouse our kids seem to taunt us at times, daring us to discipline them. ?They seem confident by the fact that most of us parents really don?t know what we?re doing nor do we have the stamina or will to keep up with them. ?In order to improve our relationships as parents and to make sure that our discipline can create the results both the parents and children need I?ve put together a few rules to help us along the way.? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?Recognize Who Is the Real Discipline Problem

Most of us that struggle disciplining our children, lack discipline ourselves.? By not having the discipline to discipline, we don?t allow our children to suffer their own consequences.? We become too protective and actually incubate our child from the real trials and realities of life.? Most of us as parents feel like we?re helping the child by protecting them from life, but in reality we?re only making them softer until they have to learn the lesson at another part of their life.? There is a fine balance between mercy and justice that must learn to be walked by every parent in order to create healthier children.

Tool: ?Ask yourself the question?Do you possess the discipline to effectively discipline your children? ?What can you do today to become more disciplined in your ability to discipline your children??

?

Discipline for Growth, Not for ?Gotcha?

In order for discipline to be truly effective, we should always remember the reason we are disciplining our child in the first place. Is our discipline designed to punish your child for their past behavior or prepare them for a healthier future?? When it comes to your discipline, do you do it more with a spirit of growth or ?gotcha?? ?When our children sense that our purpose for disciplining them is out of our love and desire for them to live a healthier more productive life, then our discipline doesn?t need to seem personal.? We really can just let the consequences of their actions be the teacher, instead of your punitive punishments. This spirit eliminates the competition that can arise between parent and child and open the child up to being more teachable and willing to see that their discipline is good for them.

Tool: ?Ask yourself the question? Are you punishing to ?get them? or our of retribution, or in the moment are you actually trying to enable growth? ?Would three other witnesses in the room agree with you based on your approach, tone and style?

?

Lead with the Principle Not the Punishment ?

We have gotten away from the ?law of the harvest? that every farmer on earth had to learn to survive.? The idea that you ?reap what you sow? or that you can really only expect to harvest in fall what you planted in the spring.? Inherent in every moment of discipline are principles that will govern the process.? One key to creating healthy consequences is to make sure that you personally understand the principle behind the lesson you are trying to teach.? For example, let?s say that after your child returns from school, you hear he had been calling another child names and disrespecting her on the way home from school.? That child?s mother has called you to inform you of his behavior.? So when your child walks in the house, what do you do?? If all of our consequences should flow from our principles, then don?t we need to first establish what principles have been violated?? Instead of taking all of your negative energy from being humiliated about your son?s behavior and starting the punishment process, I would suggest we clearly identify one principle that we would want to work on.? Is your problem with your son?s behavior that he was disrespectful, and you want to help him be more respectful?? Or was it that he was too reactive and you want him to be more in control of his emotions?? You must first figure that out in order to know how you would like to discipline the boy.? By clearly seeing that it was a violation of respect and control, you would probably want to choose consequences that are more likely to grow respect and control.? Instead however, when we don?t know the principle we?re trying to improve, we usually end up losing our own control and being disrespectful to our own child by yelling, spanking and grounding them for their behavior.

Tool: ?Identify the real principle behind each punishment before moving into the punishment phase. ?Let the principle guide the punishment, not your emotion.

?

Let Your Child Pick Their Poison

Once we?ve decided what principles were violated by your child, and we really want to create more growth than ?Gotcha?, then we can brainstorm with our child about how they can learn to improve the principle they have violated.? For example, when we understand that our child violated the principle of respect and control, then you can begin to brainstorm ways with your child to improve their ability to better respect others and grow their self-control.? The most valuable part of this part of setting the consequences is the actual conversation and negotiation that will take place between the two of you.? Invite your child to come up with some ways that they can now go and show respect for the girl and the family that he had offended.? Offer your suggestions and invite suggestions from him.? For example, you could suggest that he go over to the family and apologize to the girl and her parents.? Perhaps he could write a letter of apology to the girl and could spend some time alone learning about the impact of respecting other people.? In the end, the forms of discipline are not as critical as the fact that you and your child are actually focusing on the principle that was violated.? Continue with your list until you have enough options that would create real growth for your child in the principle.? This process can also prove valuable for preventative discipline on issues that have been problems in the past and you are trying to set consequences proactively. Once the possible solutions are listed, then let your child pick which of the approaches they most want to complete.? Interestingly, when you are creating consequences for potential or future problems, your child will usually pick consequences that are more severe or strict than you ever would.? That is how you put the teeth in the consequence, simply by letting them set the bar for themselves.? They also are much more inclined to follow a consequence that they created than one you created.

Tools: ?Brainstorm ways or consequences for your child based on the principle that they violated. ?Allow your child to come up with consequences as well and then allow your child to pick the their own consequences based upon your brainstorm list. ?This approach works incredibly well with problems you want to stop in the future as well.

?

Reinforce Your Relationship With Love

In the end, we must remember that our primary purpose for disciplining our children is because we love them.? To discipline our children without them feeling some sense of love will leave the message only partially delivered.? Our children want to please us and they want to improve their lives.? The best conditions for growth and discipline in children will be to have a loving family who is by their side, no matter how they perform.? Our unconditional love in the end is nothing more than us modeling a principle and consequence.? Our love ends up being a lesson that they will never forget.

Tool: ?Always reinforce your child with love, showing him/her that no matter what your love will be their in an unconditional way. ?Allow your love to be the governing principle of all of your discipline.

?

In the end, you discipline because you care and always remember that they care as well. ?Let?s just not let our lack of discipline destroy our discipline.

When a family gets crafty, we get a craft room! |

Its finally happened! The girls have discovered the joy of crafts ? unfortunately, this means they are constantly pinching all my stuff but I?ll try to be calm about it.

Millie has taught herself to knit rather than sleep and is often found clicking away at midnight. (Her project of choice is an IPod cover if you are wondering)? It was our wedding anniversary on Saturday so Millie and Violet set about raiding the craft supplies and came up with this fabulous card. I can?t remember them being so quiet for such a long period of time for ages. Its ironic that one of my plans for the summer was to get the girls crafting but they have gone on and done it without me.

It?s wonderful to feel that the HUGE collection of craft supplies I have built up over the years have a new lease of life but it has made me how much we have and that we need a blinkin good sortout. I have agreed with OH that our office is to be turned into a craft haven. Its a small room that is shamefully currently the home of our enormous ironing pile. The desk has been donated to a friends shop so needs replacing with a more suitable workspace. An ideal opportunity for us to go to www.thefurnituremarket.co.uk

As for me, I?m into EVERYTHING! My involvement with our local WI has resulted in me picking up my knitting needles again, I?ve learnt to cross-stitch (very slowly) and am gradually finding my way around my sewing machine. We are even embarking on our first attempt at Guerilla Knitting/Yarn Bombing with a huge project being underway. I personally fancy having a go at these lovely knitted synchronised swimmers!

I hate to mention the ?C? word but Christmas present plans are well under way ? I will admit to a couple of unfinished projects from last year being on the list but there?s a lot of ironing to get through first! With only 51 weeks to go until the big 40, time is pressing for the completion of the ironing pile, the conversion into a craft room and learning to be an expert on the sewing machine.

PS The girls added a poem to our anniversary card. I thought I?d share it:

First comes love, then comes marriage.
Then come 3 babies in a baby carriage!

Which Small Business Web Platform has the Best SEO? | Business 2 ...

Choosing a blog, shopping cart or website with the best SEO (Search Engine Optimization) Web design can help startups, bloggers and small businesses generate more Web traffic and revenue as quickly as possible.

Web platforms that don?t have the best SEO features built-in can slow down the process of growing long term organic search traffic, because content won?t rank as high in the SERPs (Search Engine Results Pages).

This article will compare the SEO performance of some of the leading Web design, CMS, online shopping cart, and website builders to help you decide on the best Web platform for your small business, blog or startup.

Comparing SEO for different Web platforms

Any entrepreneur experienced in Internet based businesses or startups will know that one of the most important requirements for online success is to start generating sustainable revenue as early as possible.

By ensuring that webpages are ranked as high as possible by Google search, small businesses, bloggers and startups can ensure they squeeze the most revenue out of the web as possible.

The comparisons below focus on demo SEO profiles of each Web platform ? since these are representative of the SEO of sites on these platforms. Note that while there will be differences in the SEO profiles, every effort has been made to choose simple, lightweight examples to make things as fair as possible.

It?s important to keep two things in mind when deciding which Web platform to use for your blog, startup or business:

  1. Some platforms have flexible SEO features and can be drastically improved
  2. The less SEO development required, the more resources can be focused on growing the core business

So, while it may be possible to improve the SEO of the Web platforms discussed below, it is important to understand that SEO can be difficult and time-consuming.

Ask yourself ?Where do I want my precious resources focused during the fragile startup phase??

table.web-seo tr td, table.web-seo tr th{ padding: 5px; }

eCommerce SEO

Overall, the eCommerce platforms included in this comparison had good SEO features. However, there is a tendency for some of them to focus on visual aspects of the page instead of trying to drive more organic search traffic from great SEO.

Website builder SEO

As you?d expect, there is quite a range of SEO features and performance for sites using online Website builders. Most website builders do a great job of providing top notch SEO features.

However, don?t get caught up in all the cool extra features and flashy design templates. These work to slow your site and alter your content?s SEO profile so that ranking may suffer ? stick to clean, simple interfaces and you?ll be driving traffic in no time.

CMS SEO

CMS?s (Content Management Systems) can be completely overhauled provided you have access to the source code (HTML, CSS, and PHP), and the sEO knowledge and skills to go with the technical requirements.

I?ve included SEO Entrepreneur?s SEO performance to show the huge difference between a basic CMS (in this case, Drupal) website, and one that has world class SEO improvements like SEO Entrepreneur.

If you are interested in creating a blog or website that has the latest SEO enhancements, SEO Entrepreneur?s Web platform is available as an SEO optimized hosted small business or blog solution.

Contact SEO Entrepreneur to find out more about how to purchase a copy of SEO Entrepreneur?s SEO and performance enhanced Drupal platform.

Have you worked on SEO in order to improve organic search traffic and drive business? Has the time and effort invested in SEO paid off? How high do you rate unbeatable SEO for driving business online? Celebrating the Ordinary ? Day One ? Journeying Beyond Breast ...

I thought this very apt when I saw it on my Facebook timeline this morning!

Some of you couldn?t? wait to get started with this challenge of celebrating the ordinary. Nancy of The Pink Underbelly got started straight away, closely followed by Philippa of A Feisty Blue Gecko and both Sinead and Jamie sent me adorable pictures of their pets which I have posted to Facebook.

I really love how you have embraced this challenge, and I was so happy when I read? Philippa?s words that the biggest challenge will be only finding one thing to post each day. Isn?t that a wonderful way to look at life?!

Bloc Projects: 4 x 24 Photography Exhibition | Carolina STYLE ...

?

Nathan Wellman

In the art world, the technique and skill of an artist is valued just as much as the subject in a piece of work. Photographers of the past would spend hours in a dark room carefully examining their film, meticulously perfecting their prized shot until it manifested into brilliance. In the age of growing technology, though, a new photographic art is emerging. The digital era brought a generation of talented individuals who not only have a good eye for a great picture, but are computer savvy as well.

The 4 x 24 Photography Exhibition at the Miriam Preston Block Gallery is a prime example of such photographic evolution. Four student artists of the Living Arts College, each no older than 24, have defied the expectations of tradition, and are leading the digital photography revolution; Gerri Fernandez, Adam Hajnos, Julian Thomas, and Nathan Wellman. These award winning photographers have accomplished much in the art world, and are taking modern technology to the next level. ?It?s amazing to be in the show with these people,? said Julian, ?I can see the talent in everyone. You can see where their talent is and what makes them so good, and you can see it in every photo.?

Adam?s focus is to capture popular icons in their moment and tell their story, while Julian uses communication with his subjects to stimulate the emotion in their eyes. Nathan stages his vision and creates directly from his imagination, and Gerri embraces the free spirit of her medium, allowing herself to create from a concept, and watch it grow. Each collection gives a unique perspective of how the artists view their subjects, and what it is that they want others to see, feel, and think. ?The thing that I really enjoy about art is the power to evoke some emotion,? said Gerri, ?I want photography to move someone in a certain way.?

Curator Georges Le Chevallier, an artist himself and professor to the exhibition artists, worked with the artists for two years putting this showcase of young talent together. Choosing only a handful of pictures out of the hundreds each artist had created, the pictures within each individual display capture the artists? vision and diligent process, without the use of a dark room. While more traditional artists view digital mechanisms as ?a lacking of experiential truth,? Georges sees it as an evolution in the medium. ?If you?re 24 years old or younger, you most likely stop using film in your photographs,? said Chevallier, stating on the Bloc Projects Website that ??for the young people these are very valid and true experiences?there has been very few times throughout history that such an ideological gap existed between old and new ways of using technology for the creation of art.?

Recognized for their astounding work and groundbreaking techniques, Georges believes that the exhibition artists are the future of photography. ?They are the four most talented students I?ve ever had in any of the classes or any of the schools I?ve taught,? said Chevallier, ?In my opinion they?re going to be big, they?re going to be very well known, so I wanted to help them get started.?

The 4 x 24 Photography Exhibition runs through September 17th.

The Best Search Engine Optimization Tips Online | Internet ...

The competition is fierce for website visitors. Search engine optimization can be your best option to attract more viewers. People all over the world rely on search engines to help them locate information, find products, and learn about different brands. Follow the tactical advice below, and watch the traffic to your site start growing.

To optimize your place on search engine results, include a myriad of keywords, including misspellings of keywords, in the ?metatag? area of your website setup. Search engine bots will be able to ?read? the metatags and improve your sites search engine rankings. As an example, if your website is about drinking glasses, be sure your metatag includes ?drinking,? ?glasses,? ?drinkingglasses,? etc.

It is unwise to use duplicate content on your site, because it will result in a lower search ranking on Google. Instead, think of something new to write about to attract a different audience.

Try to make each page on your site different from the others. Pay particular attention to the titles you use. Titles are very important when it comes to SEO. If you want your web site to appear in the first pages of results, use keywords in your titles.

Leaving posts on blogs that are compatible to yours may allow you to link through to their site. Most blog owners allow you to include a link if you reciprocate and leave relevant and substantial comments. You should avoid blogs on subjects and products that are not related to your site. When you do leave comments, make sure they are helpful to the blog owners. Being educated in your subject matter means your comments, including your links, will be accepted on a number of blogs.

Websites with meaningful content often rank higher than those that just sell products and services. Post relevant articles about the products you sell. Include tips on the use of the products. Post customer reviews of your product also.

What you put in your title tags is important. For the best results, make use of your chosen keywords. So that everything is linked together, include the title tag on all of your site?s pages. Use your company name, if you have one, near the end of your title link. Remember that people are not likely to search for your specific company name unless your name is well known and famous.

Ask them about their experience in the business. To make an educated choice, you need to be aware of all risks and potential downsides that may be involved.

Make sure every page of your site is tightly focused around both your primary keywords and your niche. Constantly update your website with relevant content that is packed with keywords. Use your keywords in your image captions, URL, links and other relevant areas. The more places you can find to use your keywords, the more frequently your website is going to appear on search result pages.

Try entering the podcast world. Podcasts can be both video and audio, and they are often streamed live with relevant information for their audience. Podcasts are popular, and a lot of people are doing this. All you need is a video camera. Be sure to include a description of your podcast so the search engines can index it.

Refrain from creating a page that has nothing on it except links. Blend them in with the other content on your page. Pages that are filled with links are often ignored by readers who often find them boring. Many search engines do not rank these pages favorably. Use content that is relevant to your site and only use links that are relevant to that content. This will show search engines that your pages are credible.

Add meta descriptions to each page on your site to improve your search engine placement. A good description tag will make your site stand out on the search engine results page. Keep your meta tag short and to the point. A cleverly worded meta tag should get more traffic to your site even if it happens to be ranked lower in the search engines.

High quality, unique content is one of the best ways to boost your search engine rankings. To attract traffic, you need to provide information that is different from that on other sites and other Web pages. You will retain more visitors when your content is interesting and unique.

Successfully optimizing your site for search engines may seem intimidating, but as this article has shown you, it doesn?t have to be difficult. Knowing the few basic principles that determine how the search engines work, can help you tweak your site to attract more visitors than ever. Before you know it, you?ll have a slew of new

Search Engine Optimization, SEO

Dozens of earthquakes rattle Southern California

By NBCSanDiego.com and news services

Updated at 11:58 p.m. ET: A rash of up to 70 moderate earthquakes rattled Southern California on Sunday, shaking an area from rural Imperial County to the San Diego coast and north into the Coachella Valley.

According to the USGS, the largest quake was 5.5-magnitude that rattled Brawley, Calif., small Imperial County farming town, just before 2 p.m.

A 5.3 magnitude quake struck at 12:31 p.m. about three miles north-northwest of Brawley, according to Paul Caruso, a geophysicist with the U.S. Geological Survey. It was followed minutes later by a 4.9 magnitude quake.

The epicenters of the bigger earthquakes were 11 to 12 miles from Imperial, Calif., and 15 to 16 miles from El Centro, Calif., the USGS reported.

Read the story at NBC 7 San Diego

Several glasses and a bottle of wine crashed to the floor and shattered at Assaggio, an Italian restaurant in Brawley, said owner Jerry Ma. The shaking was short-lived but intense, he said.? ?

"It felt like there was quake every 15 minutes. One after another. My kids are small and they're scared and don't want to come back inside," said Mike Patel, who manages Townhouse Inn & Suites in Brawley. A TV came crashing down and a few light fixtures broke inside the motel, Patel said.? ?

A Brawley Police Department dispatcher said several downtown buildings sustained minor damage. No injuries were reported.

The USGS said more than 100 aftershocks struck the same approximate epicenter, about 16 miles north of El Centro. Some shaking was felt along the San Diego County coast in Del Mar, some 120 miles from the epicenter, as well as in the Coachella Valley, southern Orange County and parts of northern Mexico.

The quakes pushed 20 mobile homes at a trailer park off their foundations, displacing the families that lived in them, said Maria Peinado, a spokeswoman for the Imperial County Emergency Operations Center.

Sporadic power outages affecting 2,500 Imperial Irrigation District customers also prompted authorities to evacuate some patients from one of the county's two hospitals.

No injuries were reported.

Residents across San Diego County reported feeling the quakes in places including downtown San Diego, Mission Valley, Santee and Chula Vista. No injuries were reported.

San Diego State University geology expert Pat Abbott told NBC 7 San Diego that Sunday?s earthquakes were in the middle of the Brawley Seismic Zone, famous for swarms of quakes. He said he expected aftershocks.

?[The Brawley Seismic Zone] is a broad zone with lots of little faults,? Abbott explained.

?This area has clearly activated. We will likely experience swarms of 3, 4 and 5-magnitude [earthquakes] but they are not likely to increase in intensity. Of course, there are no guarantees on this, but history says they likely won?t get bigger ? that we will experience more of the same or smaller quakes,? he added.?

History of the Screenwriters' Workshop: 1987-2012 : Screenwriters ...

In 1987, screenwriters Brent Johnson and Susan Weisman developed the original idea for Screenwriters? Workshop. After working on a screenplay production project with local film professionals with the purpose of getting more film experience, Brent and Susan decided to establish a permanent organization that could continue to offer screenwriters similar collaborative experiences along with a variety of other learning opportunities. This was with the purpose of making the screenwriter and their script the focus of the creative process. Over the past twenty-five years, this vision has been pursued through the efforts of many individuals and the various programs of SWW.
The Screen Labs program produced shorts films from member scripts using the creative and production resources in the Twin Cities. Robb Mitchell served as ScreenLabs producer for several years and he and previous producers were able to bring the directors, actors and various film production personnel from the Twin Cities together to create some wonderful work. The current Script2Screen program carries on this production tradition using a three month long theme-based short screenplay contest to choose a winning script, which is then filmed.

Script readings have been a constant throughout SWW?s history. The current Script Night Reading Series, which has been held at the Jungle Theater the past two years, showcases member scripts. These readings have a director and professional actors. The 2nd Tuesday Reading Group, facilitated by Karen Frank, is a more informal script reading utilizing SWW members and MCTC students as actors in a table read format.

For many years, the Barry Morrow Fellowship was a feature-length contest, which gave the winner a meeting with Rainman writer, Barry Morrow. A feature-length script contest emerged again in 2011 with sponsorship from Thomson-Reuters, and will continue for the second year in 2012. Along with a cash prize, the 2011 contest winner, Larry Matthews, received a Script Night staged reading and a meeting with producer Judith James of Dreyfus-James Productions.

In the early days, ScreenLine was the newsletter that kept members updated on member news, writing tips and Minnesota film news. John Jansen was a long-time editor. Now the SWW website and e-mail are the sources of information for members.

SWW has had many well-known screenwriters and writing instructors speak to its membership over the years, such as local writers Jeffrey Hatcher and Judith Guest, as well as nationally known writers such as Barry Morrow, David Trottier, and Stephen McFeely.

And finally, SWW has fostered screenwriting groups. Three weekly Script Groups provide a forum for writers and fellow members to read script pages aloud and receive feedback. While there were private member groups in the early days and still are, SWW now sponsors three ongoing script groups which meet weekly throughout the year and are open to any member of any level.

SWW has had peaks and valleys throughout the years, but it continues to aid Minnesota screenwriters in improving their craft and creative development. The Screenwriters? Workshop has always been run by a small group of dedicated people and we are grateful to all of our current leaders as well as former leaders and founders. We also greatly appreciate the continued involvement and support of our members, without whom this organization would not exist. We would like to thank our current board members for their service ? Hafed Bouassida, Ed Leschke, Perry Lueders, and Trina Koning. We also express our gratitude to former board members for their service ? some of which include Robb Mitchell, Christopher Gegax, Chris Velasco, James McConnell, Brett Johnson, Julie Rappaport, and Cheryl Conway (apologies for an incomplete list). We hope to continue for many more years with the support of our members and the wider community.
