GeekDad Review: Spiral Knights Online RPG

SEGA recently launched Spiral Knights in April and since I am a huge role- playing game fan, I thought I would give it a try. This marks the newest title from online game developer Three Rings. Spiral Knights is completely free-to-play,offering players around the world classic, console-style adventuring in a persistent world. This is certainly a great diversion from any other online games and really makes you wonder how something this fun can be free.
The story behind the game plays out like this:

The Spiral Knights have crashed onto Cradle, a hostile planet teeming with unfriendly alien creatures. Equipment stores have been raided and your starship, The Skylark, will not recover from the crash. As a Knight, you must work together with your fellow Knights to survive on a journey that will take you to the very core of the world. Any hope of survival you may have rests on your ability to amass an arsenal of weapons and gear that will provide you with the right options for any environment.

The game is chock full of colorful fun and co-op goodness, definitely reminiscent of action RPGs from the 8bit and 16bit eras. Players can create guilds, craft new gear, and customize the looks and abilities of their characters. Gear and weapons are upgradeable through adventuring and alchemy, which is the gathering of ingredients to create an effect. Players can also purchase Crystal Energy to upgrade their characters.

The game also offers controller support. I have a wired Xbox controller plugged into the PC, which made Spiral Knights play like a dream. I highly recommend Spiral Knights to the casual gamer. It is very fun and addictive, however hardcore gamers might find it too old-school.
