Sir Vivian Richards to coach Melbourne Stars ? Cricket News Update
The legendary Sir Vivian Richards was appointed as the Melbourne Stars' coach this Friday, just before the upcoming Big Bash league scheduled to take place next month.
The Twenty20 side led by skipper Shane Warne was more than happy to have such a mentor ahead of their second season in the Big Bash League. Richards, who gave swagger a new meaning in the game of cricket, was also very excited about the opportunity.
"To be given an opportunity to come back to the scene of the crime, I'm very excited about that," said Richards.
Bestowed with the latest responsibility, the 60-year-old legend added, "I'm going to be around. I'm not one of these individuals who's going to be here basically for my looks."
Retiring from the international arena in 1991, the player was known as the most destructive batsman of his era, playing for the West Indian side. Never having played a T20 game in his tenure as an international cricketer, Richards finds the shortest version of the game very exciting.
Richards' appointment was considered an accomplishment for the team, as indicated by the Chairman of Selectors for Melbourne Stars, Ian Chappell.
Described as ?A batsman who intimidated bowlers? by the former Pakistan captain, Imran Khan, the legendary batsman played 121 Tests and 187 One Dayers. With nothing more to prove as a cricketer, the new task would be another challenge for him.
Melbourne Stars, having a great mix of players like Shane Warne, Lasith Malinga, James Pattinson and David Hussey, alongside an experienced coaching staff, appear to have good chances in the upcoming BBL.
Showing his lighter side, the newly appointed coach joked that he would be overjoyed if asked to take the field in case injuries demanded it.
Come the next month, the team is scheduled to inaugurate the BBL season against the Melbourne Renegades on December 7, 2012.
