Tracking Sports History: Knox opens against Hawkeyes, Illini

The 1927-28 Knox College basketball team could not be accused of scheduling ?patsy? opponents.
The ?Siwashers? kicked off their season traveling to Iowa City, Iowa to play the University of Iowa for the first time in school history.

Less than one week later, Knox motored to Champaing-Urbana for an encounter with the University of Illinois.

Although Iowa won 30-21 Knox played a strong second half after a poor shooting exhibition in the opening stanza. Knox actually outscored the Hawkeyes 14-13 in the second half led by the shooting of Avon's Lloyd Pool, who scored 10 points

Knox gave the Fighting Illini all they could handle before falling 28-22.

Knox coach Dean Trevor concluded that Big Ten basketball is rough stuff, especially the way the Illini demonstrated.

Illinois was charged with 15 fouls and Knox only seven. Free tosses by the Siwash accounted for nearly half of their point total. Surprisingly,? Pool ? who was accustomed to leading Knox in scoring most of the year ? was held to only one field goal.

One of the starting guards for Illinois was Doug Mills who would eventually become their head basketball coach.

Chuck Bednar ? who would become coach and athletic director at Galesburg High School ?? held down the guard position for Knox against the Illini.

Knox finished the 1927-28 season with an overall record of 8-6 and was led in scoring by Pool with 141 points.?

Knox defeated Augustana twice and split games against their top rival Monmouth on a last second rebound basket 28-27.

Knox scores record high
It is almost mind boggling to learn that when the Knox College basketball team scored 86 points in January 1953 it established a new one game scoring record. The record scoring spree enabled Knox to upset Illinois Tech 86-76.

In the second quarter, Tech held a 29-25 lead when all of a sudden Knox went on a blazing bucket brigade running off a 17-1 margin in less than four minutes. Four Knox players scored in double figures
At press time Tracking Sports History was unsuccessful in determining when Knox scored 90 or over a 100 points for the first time.

In January 1988, Knox defeated Lawrence University in a super shootout victory 109-105. Both teams displayed torrid shooting with Knox connecting at 61 percent and sinking 29 free throws. Current Rock Island coach Thom Sigel contributed to the Knox cause.

Bullets hit century mark
On February 8, 1952, a Knoxville High School basketball team scored 100 points for the first time ever in their home gym. The feat was extra special with the Blue Bullets defeating rival Abingdon 100-56. The win avenged a 55-54 loss to Abingdon in the finals of the Knox County Tournament.

With 11 seconds remaining Knoxville?s Rollie Ecklund pumped in a 5-footer to hit the century mark. John Liston of Knoxville ? who led the state in scoring during the season ?? hit 14 field goals and sank six free throws for a game high 34 points.

One week later Knoxville hit the century mark again during a 100-44 victory over Alexis. Liston and Jamie Bjorkman shared scoring honors with 22 points each.

Knoxville vaulted from the two century mark accomplishments to win their first Regional Tournament Title in history.

GHS, Corpus meet on gridiron?
In answer to a curious reader who inquired if Galesburg High School and Corpus Christi ever met on the football field, it never occurred, but was contemplated.
Following the regular season in 1931 it was urged by Galesburg Mayor Joe Anderson that the Alumni of each school play to raise funds for the ?Unemployment Fund.?
