The US,United States,U.S.,countries real estate, housing, home market has revovered, improved, but still ?far from out of difficulties?, stated, said the Federal Reserve chair, chairman, Ben Bernanke, stating, noting that increasingly, overly dfficult, strict loan, lending, morgage standards remain, are part of the issue, problem.

The Federal Reserve,Fed, which has put the focus on mortgage bonds during this, the last round of asset purchases, continues doing what it can to prop up,support the real estate, housing market, he added.

A bubble in the US,United States,countries,U.S. real estate,housing market caused,triggered the financial meltdown,melt down,crisis and a terrible,horrific,brutal recession from 2007 to 2010,2011,2009 that continues to burden,weigh on the world economy. Info,Information,Data from the past,last few months, however, has,have proven,shown that the market,sector is recovering,in recovery,reviving.

?While there are good reasons to be excited about the recent direction of the housing market, we should not be satisfied with the progress we have seen so far?, Bernanke said in remarks prepared for the,an event.

The federal,Fed chair, chairman, leader noted that tighter, tougher, more stringent standards for granting, allowing, giving credit are, were an adequate, correct, appropriate response to the max, inflated, maximum cost, price of housing, real estate, houses that followed the crisis.

?However, at this time, point it is probable, possible that the momentum, pendulum has swung, gone too far and presently, now very, exceedingly, extremely stringent lending, mortgage, loan requirements, conditions are preventing qualified, deserving credit borrowers from,to purchase real estate, property, houses, homes, which again, therefore delays, slows the recovery of the real estate, housing market, sector as well as,and prevents economic recovery?, Bernacke,he said.

During the last weeks, months of prior, previous year, ?Ben suggested that other offices, authorities in DC, Washington DC,Washington, the capital were considering steps to free up credit to boost the housing, real estate market, sector.

But critics in Washington,on Capitol Hill stated, said the Fed, Federal Reserve, central bank should stay, remain, continue to be involved in,attached to monetary policy.

When Tim Brown and Jerry Rice made their bizarre accusations that their former coach, Bill Callahan, sabotaged the team in Super Bowl XXXVII, they both dragged former Raiders center Barret Robbins into it: Brown and Rice both said they thought Robbins, who abruptly left the team the day before the game, had a mental breakdown that was triggered by Callahan suddenly and unexpectedly changing the game plan.

Robbins, however, says he doesn?t remember that.

In an interview with Sports Radio 610, Robbins said that he had been dealing with mental and physical health issues before the Raiders got to the Super Bowl, and Robbins says he has no memory of anything related to Callahan?s game plan for that game.

?I would be absolutely wrong to tell you that that was the case,? Robbins said. ?If Tim Brown goes on record and says that he changed the game plan on Friday, I don?t remember. Because you?ve got to understand, I was going through a manic episode that had lasted more than two weeks. At that point in time, when we went to the Super Bowl, I was having to shoot my foot up, I was having acupuncture, going through a lot of pain. It was a lot of stress. Pain is a big trigger when it comes to bipolar, that was something I was going through, as well as self-medicating.?

Robbins also said, however, that he doesn?t have any reason to believe Brown was wrong.

?I?m not going to say that I remember the exact meeting that that took place, but I haven?t heard anybody deny it,? Robbins said.

If Robbins hasn?t heard anybody deny it, that simply means he hasn?t been paying attention to the story. Callahan has denied it in the strongest terms, and he?s been backed up by multiple people who were in the Raiders? offensive meetings before the Super Bowl, including former quarterback Rich Gannon, former offensive tackle Lincoln Kennedy and former assistant coach Jim Harbaugh. And Brown himself has backed off his initial claims.

It?s been more than a month since Brown made his initial accusation against Callahan, and the topic is still being raised with players and coaches who were on that Raiders team. Whether he meant to or not, Brown opened a very large can of worms when he suggested that his old coach threw the Super Bowl.

Protein balance key in preventing cancer

Feb. 27, 2013 ? Two proteins that scientists once thought carried out the same functions are actually antagonists of each other, and keeping them in balance is key to preventing diseases such as cancer, according to new findings published in the February 25 issue of Developmental Cell by scientists at Fox Chase Cancer Center. The results suggest that new compounds could fight cancer by targeting the pathways responsible for maintaining the proper balance between the proteins.

"It's our job now to understand how we can intervene therapeutically in this system, so we can restore balance when it's thrown off," says study author David L. Wiest, PhD, professor and deputy chief scientific officer at Fox Chase.

The two proteins -- "Rpl22" and "Rpl22-like1," which contribute to the process by which additional cellular proteins are made -- are created from two similar genes, leading researchers to previously believe they were performing identical functions in the body. "What we're finding is that is absolutely not true," says Wiest. "Not only are they performing different functions, they are antagonizing each other."

During the study, Wiest and his team knocked out Rpl22 in zebrafish -- a common model of human disease. Without Rpl22, the zebrafish don't develop a type of T cells (a blood cell) that helps fight infections. The same developmental defect was observed when they knocked out Rpl22-like1, indicating that both proteins are independently required to enable stem cells to give rise to T cells.

But when the researchers tried to restore T cells in zebrafish that lacked Rpl22 by adding back Rpl22-like1, it didn't work. The reverse was also true -- Rpl22 was not enough to restore function after the researchers eliminated Rpl22-like1. These results led Wiest and his team to believe that, although the proteins are both involved in producing stem cells, they do not perform the same function.

To learn more about the proteins' individual functions, the researchers looked at the levels of different proteins involved in stem cell production when either Rpl22 or Rpl22-like1 was absent. Without Rpl22-like1, cells had lower levels of a protein known as Smad1 -- a critical driver of stem cell development. And when Rpl22 disappeared, levels of Smad1 increased dramatically.

Both proteins can bind directly to the cellular RNA from which Smad1 is produced, suggesting that they maintain balance in stem cell production via their antagonistic effects on Smad1 expression, explains Wiest.

"I like to think of Rpl22 as a brake, and Rpl22-like1 as a gas pedal -- in order to drive stem cell production, both have to be employed properly. If one or the other is too high, this upsets the balance of forces that regulate stem cell production, with potentially deadly effects," says Wiest.

Specifically, too much Rpl22 (the "brake"), and stem cell production shuts off, decreasing the number of blood cells and leading to problems such as anemia. Too much Rpl22-like1 (the "gas pedal"), on the other hand, can create an over-production of stem cells, leading to leukemia.

Previous research has found that Rpl22-like1 is often elevated in cancer, including 80% of cases of acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Conversely, researchers have found that in other cancers, the gene that encodes Rpl22 is deleted. "Either one of these events is sufficient to alter the balance in stem cell production in a way that pushes towards cancer," says Wiest.

Bucking party, GOP leaders sign pro-gay marriage brief

By Miranda Leitsinger, Staff Writer, NBC News

Supporters of same-sex marriage hope for a boost this week when dozens of high-profile Republicans, many no longer in office, submit their legal argument to the Supreme Court on why gays and lesbians should be allowed to wed, bucking their party platform.

In a?move described by one scholar as ?inconceivable? just two years ago, 75 Republicans have signed the brief to be filed in the case of Proposition 8, a California law banning same-sex marriage, The New York Times reported. The nation?s high court will hear arguments on the law in late March.

Four former governors, including Christine Todd Whitman of New Jersey, and members of President George W. Bush?s cabinet, such as former Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez, signed the brief, the Times reported. Some of those, such as Meg Whitman, who ran for California governor in 2010, had once opposed same-sex marriage.

The brief will be filed Thursday, according to the Human Rights Campaign, a gay rights group.

Michael Klarman, a Harvard Law School professor and author of ?From the Closet to the Altar: Courts, Backlash, and the Struggle for Same-Sex Marriage,? called it an ?incredibly important development? and noted the brief could influence Justice Anthony Kennedy, whom he said was the swing vote on gay marriage.

?The fact that more and more Republicans are coming out in favor of gay marriage simply confirms how dramatic the shift in public opinion has been -- and that is a fact that likely is of great significance to Justice Kennedy,? he wrote to NBC News in an email. ?Even two years ago, it would have been inconceivable that this many prominent Republicans would have been willing to buck their party platform on the issue.?

One of those who signed the brief was former Utah governor and Republican presidential candidate Jon Huntsman. In an article last week, Huntsman wrote that as governor he had backed civil unions but now was supporting marriage for gays and lesbians.

?The party of Lincoln should stand with our best tradition of equality and support full civil marriage for all Americans,? he wrote. ?This is both the right thing to do and will better allow us to confront the real choice our country is facing: a choice between the Founders? vision of a limited government that empowers free markets, with a level playing field giving opportunity to all, and a world of crony capitalism and rent-seeking by the most powerful economic interests.?

Huntsman?s argument echoed parts of the legal brief, which the Times said made the case that allowing same-sex marriage would promote conservative ideals of limited government and individual freedom as well as provide the children of gay couples?a two-parent home.

The legal brief was dismissed by the National Organization for Marriage, which on Monday pledged $500,000 to defeat Republican lawmakers supporting any law to allow same-sex marriage in Minnesota, a state considering such legislation.

?None of these people are actively in politics. They are not running for office because they know ? supporting same-sex marriage will end your career if you?re a Republican,? he said. ?There?s overwhelming support for traditional marriage in the Republican Party, that?s why it?s part of the party platform, and any attempt by the establishment to redefine marriage and redefine what it means to be a conservative will mean the death of the Republican party.?

But LGBT groups said the brief was further proof of changing attitudes on the issue.

?As opposition to the freedom to marry becomes increasingly isolated and the exclusion from marriage increasingly indefensible, Americans all across the political spectrum are saying it's time to end marriage discrimination, do right by families, and get our country on the right side of history,"?Evan Wolfson, founder and president of Freedom to Marry, said in a statement.?

The Supreme Court will also hear arguments in late March on the Defense of Marriage Act, which bars federal recognition of same-sex marriage. The Obama administration has encouraged the justices to strike it down. In its argument, the federal government noted Proposition 8 and similar measures in other states was evidence that anti-gay discrimination remained a major problem.

Paula Deen Still Feels Fat, Still Eats Fried Chicken (Just Not As Much)

Celebrity chef Paula Deen poses for a portrait in New York. (AP Photo/Carlo Allegri, File)

Paula Deen was in Miami last week for the annual South Beach Wine & Food Festival, and the celebrity chef turned a few heads after her uninhibited Today Show appearance.

Deen took a break from partying to speak to The Miami Herald about her current diet plan. Deen has lost 40 pounds since announcing her diabetes diagnosis in early 2012.

?I still feel like a fat ass,? Deen told the Herald. "I need a chin lift so bad."

Deen's been preaching moderation for many months now. She's not eliminating many foods, just eating less of them, the star chef told the Herald.

"When she eats fried chicken, now it?s just a wing," the Herald reported.

The PaulaDeen.com website is now in line with Deen's new diet mission. The most prominent links on the site are about a contest around eating healthy with diabetes, an article about fennel seasonality, and recipes for energy bars and lighter eclairs. It's a far cry from fried butter balls.

UChek Is A New App That Does Mobile Urinalysis On The Cheap

peeappLike to use your iPhone on the toilet? Myshkin Ingawale has an app for that. Ignawale is the co-founder of Biosense, a med tech company based in Mumbai that specializes in cheap and functional medical technologies. Last year?s product was a portable and needleless anemia screener called ToucHb. This year at TED in Los Angeles today he unveiled the charmingly named UChek, a urinalysis app for the masses. In the old days, urinalysis was a bit tougher. A sample of urine is taken in cup and a chemical strip is dipped into said urine sample. The strip is then compared to a color-coded map, which can be used to determine levels of glucose, bilirubin, protein, and other abnormalities in your urine. High levels of glucose, for example, could indicate diabetes. Although chemical strips can be deciphered by sight, there are many urine scanning machines that produce more accurate results. The problem is that they can cost up to $10,000, with limited compatibility with different types of chemical strips. Ignawale?s UChek is an app that seeks to simplify the process in an affordable way. Once the chemical strip is dipped in urine, a picture is taken of the strip with a smartphone. The app then quickly analyzes the strip and produces accurate and easy-to-understand results. While the app is currently going through testing phases in a Mumbai hospital, it is awaiting approval in Apple?s App Store. The app itself will cost $99, while an extra $20 will nab you a packet of chemical strips, a color-coded map for testing. An Android app is expected, although Ignawale says it will take a little bit longer before it?s released. “We all have two things, cell phones and urine,” Ignawale told his TED audience. “We figured we had to be able to do something with this.” He certainly isn?t the first person to have noticed. An iPhone app called Piddle was developed by Danish programmers last year in May for Health Hack Day in Stockholm, where it took first prize. Perhaps this will be the beginning of a boom in mobile urinalysis apps, as strange as that sounds?

STOCKHOLM (AP) ? After withdrawing meatballs from stores across Europe, home furnishings company Ikea said Wednesday its own tests confirmed "a few indications of horse meat" and that it would also remove wiener sausages made by the same supplier.

Ikea said it would withdraw the sausages from stores in France, Britain, Spain, Ireland and Portugal. Other stores were getting sausages from other suppliers, company spokeswoman Ylva Magnusson said.

No horse meat had been found in the wieners, which are made of ground pork and beef, but they were removed anyway because they came from the same supplier as the meatballs, Magnusson said.

The supplier, Gunnar Dafgard AB, didn't return calls seeking comment.

The move comes two days after Czech food inspectors found traces of horse meat in Ikea's Swedish-made meatballs, prompting the company to pull them from store shelves in 21 European countries and in Hong Kong, Thailand and the Dominican Republic.

Stores in other countries, including the U.S. and Canada, were not affected because they received meatballs from a different supplier.

Ikea said results from its own tests confirmed some meatballs didn't just contain beef and pork, despite what their labeling said.

"Based on some hundred test results that we have received so far, there are a few indications of horse meat," Magnusson said. "Together with the Swedish supplier in question we have decided to withdraw from sales also the wiener sausages ... from that supplier."

Horse meat has recently been found mixed into beef dishes sold across Europe, including in frozen supermarket meals. It has also been found in meals served at restaurants, schools and hospitals. Authorities say the scandal is a case of fraudulent labeling but does not pose a health risk.

The French wholesaler at the epicenter of the scandal, Spanghero, announced Wednesday that it had filed for bankruptcy protection. The company denies that it intentionally mislabeled and sold horse meat as beef, but the French government has said it should have known and temporarily forced it to shut down all production. It has slowly started to package meats again, but is not selling any to other manufacturers.

The company, which employs about 300 people, said it hoped the court filing would save its business and those jobs.

Meanwhile, food safety authorities across Europe continued to clamp down on mislabeled meat.

Latvia's food safety agency said that traces of horse meat were found in products labeled as beef by a local meatpacker, Forevers.

The agency said 416 horses were slaughtered last year in Latvia, out of which 203 were eventually delivered to Forevers from the same Latvia-based slaughterhouse, Aibi. All the horse meat was labeled as beef in the invoices, the agency said. It wasn't immediately clear if any of the meat was exported.

Also Wednesday, Russia's state sanitary watchdog said it detected horse meat in sausages imported from Austria. The agency's spokesman, Alexei Alexeyenko, said in a statement carried by the ITAR-Tass news agency that the sausages were stated to only contain beef.

Portuguese authorities said late Tuesday they had seized 79 metric tons (87 U.S. tons) of beef products containing traces of horse meat in recent days and opened criminal proceedings against five local companies. Portugal's Food Safety Agency said it made the seizures at companies that process, package and distribute meat to large retail outlets.

The agency said in a statement on its website that it also took almost 19,000 pre-packed products from Portuguese stores after detecting horse meat in them. They included lasagnas, hamburgers and meatballs.

Greed caused BP's gulf oil spill, lawyers argue

NEW ORLEANS ? Energy giant BP, behind schedule and $50 million over budget drilling a deep-water well, emphasized cost-cutting over safety, causing the largest offshore oil spill in U.S. history, lawyers said Monday as the company's high-stakes civil trial began.

Lawyers used PowerPoint presentations to provide a dramatic recounting of the April 20, 2010, explosion and fire in the Gulf of Mexico that killed 11 crew members. Workers were preparing to temporarily cap the Macondo well 4,100 feet underwater when it blew up. The 30-story drilling vessel about 50 miles offshore burned for two days before crumpling into the gulf.

The resulting spill of more than 4 million barrels of oil damaged the waters and economies of five states. And the responsible party was BP, according to the lawyers representing the federal government, Gulf Coast states and private parties.

The long-awaited trial, which is expected to last several months, could expose BP to about $17 billion in fines for violating the Clean Water Act. Federal District Judge Carl Barbier will decide whether BP's actions were negligent or grossly negligent, which could force higher fines on the company.

BP has already pleaded guilty to criminal charges stemming from the disaster and will pay $4 billion to settle the case, the largest environmental penalty in U.S. history.

During opening statements Monday, BP's actions were excoriated by a succession of lawyers who said that the London-based company's corporate leaders encouraged a culture of "entrepreneurial risk-taking."

"BP was blinded by greed," said Luther Strange, Alabama's attorney general. "To BP, money mattered most. Greed devastated the gulf."

The first phase of the complex trial will examine the role of BP and the companies it contracted with to drill its Macondo well: Transocean, the owner of the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig; Halliburton, hired by BP to cement the well hole; and Cameron International, which manufactured the blowout preventer that failed to shut down the flow of oil during the emergency. Also included is M-I Swaco, the company that provided the material for the cement job.

Barbier's wood-paneled courtroom was crowded with nearly 50 lawyers.

An 11th-hour attempt to settle the case apparently failed. The Justice Department reportedly offered a plea bargain that would require BP to pay a $16-billion penalty ? $6 billion to settle the Clean Water Act violations, $9 billion for resource damage and $1 billion to fund unforeseen environmental issues, the New York Times and Wall Street Journal reported.

A settlement could be reached at any time. Lawyers for the Justice Department and BP declined to comment on settlement talks.

Michael Underhill, an attorney with the Justice Department, emphasized what he said was BP's profit-driven culture. "The evidence will show that BP put profits above people, profits before safety and profits before the environment," he said.

In the days before the blowout, the scene on the rig ? which some workers dubbed the "well from hell" ? became increasingly chaotic, said Jim Roy, a lawyer representing businesses and individuals hurt by the spill.

The captain of the vessel, a Transocean employee, had never been trained in operating the rig's emergency systems, Roy said. The Deepwater Horizon's emergency systems, with their required audible alarms, were disconnected out of concern that the klaxons would wake the crew, he said.

There was ample finger-pointing in court as each company sought to minimize its responsibility for the disaster. The other four defendants ? Halliburton, Transocean, Cameron and M-I Swaco ? argued that the final responsibility for the rig and its crew rested with BP.

A crucial well pressure test was misinterpreted by two BP employees, an error the company has previously acknowledged. Transocean's drill crew "put too much trust in BP, and they paid for that fact with their lives," said Transocean attorney Brad Brian.

Halliburton's lawyer said key safety tests were omitted because they would have required time and money.

When BP's turn came to make an opening statement, its attorney cast the well's operation as a "team sport" and praised Transocean and Halliburton as the best in their fields.

"There is a lot of background noise about the engineering decisions made by BP," lawyer Mike Brock said. "This was a multi-party, multi-causal event."

After Barbier rules on the negligence issues and assesses each company's portion of blame, the second part of the trial is expected to begin in late summer. That phase will attempt to determine more precisely how much oil was released. That difficult accounting will determine the size of the federal fine, which could be as little as $4.5 billion.

The company would be required to pay $1,100 for each spilled barrel under the Clean Water Act. But that fine would rise to $4,300 per barrel if BP were found to be grossly negligent.

Another determination of environmental damage must also be considered under a separate statute.

Jaidah Automotive announces arrival in Doha of Chevrolet's all-new ...

The Camaro - popularly known as a 'muscle car' - debuted back in 1966 and is now in its fifth generation, which was launched in 2009 with a striking new look.

The new Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 - the most technically advanced car ever developed in its class - has arrived in Jaidah Automotive's Doha showroom.

Powered by a supercharged 6.2-liter V8 engine producing a mammoth 580 horsepower, the Camaro ZL1 is the fastest Camaro ever offered by Chevrolet, with a top speed of 296 km/h, accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds (delivered through newly-design, 20-inch forged aluminum wheels).

It is also packed with performance technologies, highlighted by Magnetic Ride Control, and advanced materials such as a vented carbon fiber hood insert.

There is a lot more to the car than just power, though. The ZL1 features technologically-advanced and highly developed chassis and suspension systems that help it deliver balanced, track-ready handling and braking power to complement its high engine output. Power is delivered to the rear wheels through either a six-speed manual or automatic transmission. With either transmission, the Camaro ZL1 delivers supercar performance.

The manual transmission has been tuned for improved shift feel, with a dual-mass flywheel, twin-disc clutch, and triple synchros for smooth, precise shifts. Similarly, the '6L90' automatic transmission has been strengthened to handle the torque and horsepower produced by the supercharged engine.

To make the ZL1 perform equally well on street and track, the 6L90 features three distinct drive modes: Drive, where the shift pattern is calibrated for optimal fuel economy; Sport, where the shift pattern is calibrated for more aggressing driving, and Manual, where the 6L90 offers the driver true manual control and maximum performance.

The Camaro ZL1 is the first sports car to feature the third-generation of Magnetic Ride. This advanced suspension system employs valveless damping and Magneto-Rheological (MR) fluid technology to match the suspension firmness to match the road and driving conditions. With Magnetic Ride Control, customers enjoy the best of both worlds: a comfortable ride that makes the ZL1 appropriate as a daily driver and the incredibly precise body control that makes the ZL1 so enjoyable on the track.

Also standard on the Camaro ZL1 is Performance Traction Management, which integrates magnetic ride control, launch control, traction control, electronic stability control and electric power steering response to enhance all aspects of performance.

Everything about the ZL1's visual design is directly related to its technology and performance, especially aerodynamics. Chevrolet's designers' goal was to execute function-oriented design with beautifully sculpted forms, creating an imposing, powerful persona. ZL1's signature from the front is the redesigned fascia and aluminum hood with a raised, carbon fiber insert. The fascia includes a front splitter and new vertical fog lamps, this area includes air intakes designed for brake cooling.

High-intensity discharge headlamps and fog lamps are standard and the rear of the car includes a diffuser and spoiler - functional elements that enhance the car's aerodynamics.

The interior of the Camaro ZL1 features standard leather seating surfaces with suede microfiber inserts and heated, powered-adjustable front seats. Microfiber suede is repeated as an accent on the instrument panel. Standard technologies include a nine-speaker Boston Acoustics audio system; USB and Bluetooth connectivity; and rear-park assist with a rear-view camera display in the 7 inch color touch screen, which is located on the dashboard. Other enhancements include a redesigned steering wheel, alloy pedals and a 'Head-Up Display with unique performance readouts.

Mr Mark Jenkins, General Manager of Jaidah Automotive, commented, "Jaidah Automotive is delighted to bring the new Camaro ZL1 to Qatar. The Camaro ZL1 is an exceptional automobile which is about high-tech performance and design, and is a type of car no one has ever brought to this segment previously. It's a car, in fact, which has never been seen in Qatar before."

"It's the most technically-advanced Camaro ever created and can only be seen in Qatar at Jaidah Automotive showrooms. It's simply stunning to look at - a real head-turner - and the stunning looks are matched by the outrageous performance coming from the 6.2-liter engine, not to mention the raft of technological improvements that have been made to the car," he added.

"Since the Camaro was reborn in 2009 with its incredible new look, the marque has gone from strength to strength, and the ZL represents the pinnacle of this particular model. When I say that the Camaro ZL1 can only be seen at the Jaidah Automotive showrooms that is true - but not for long. We anticipate that a lucky few 'owners to be' will soon be showing off the ZL1 on Doha's streets," he concluded.

"Chevrolet has somehow made what was already a fantastic automobile even better and, as a result, we are certain that there is going to be a huge level of interest in the ZL1. Believe me, when you do see a Camaro ZL1 pass you in Doha, you'll know it," added Mr Jenkins.

Tribal fighting in Darfur leaves 60 dead

KHARTOUM, Sudan (AP) ? Renewed fighting between two Arab tribes over mining rights has left 60 people dead in the northern Darfur region, Sudan's state news agency said Sunday.

The state news agency said fighting on Saturday was the worst since a cease-fire agreement was reached last month. The agency said fighting began when a group of armed tribesmen in vehicles and riding camels attacked the El-Sireaf area in North Darfur.

Sudan's western region of Darfur has been afflicted by violence since 2003, when rebels took up arms against the central government in Khartoum. Fighting also periodically erupts between tribes in the area.

According to the United Nations, more than 100 people have been killed and other 70,000 displaced from their homes because of recent tribal warfare in Darfur. The United Nation-African Union Mission in Darfur said in a report issued last month that the deaths and displacement resulted from clashes between the Abbala and Beni Hussein tribes in Jabel Amir, the site of gold mines in North Darfur state.

(AP Photo/Jacquelyn Martin, File)

(AP) ? John Kerry embarked Sunday on his first official overseas trip as secretary of state, hoping to bring new ideas to Europe and the Mideast about how to end nearly two years of violence in Syria.

Kerry's nine-nation, 10-day trip will take him to America's traditional European allies of Britain, Germany, France and Italy, along with Turkey, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar. In addition to Syria, he will focus on conflicts in Mali and Afghanistan, and on Iran's nuclear program.

Kerry has said he is eager to discuss new ways of persuading Syrian President Bashar Assad to step down and usher in a democratic transition in the country that wracked by escalating violence that has killed at least 70,000 people.

Kerry, a former Democratic senator from Massachusetts who succeeded Hillary Rodham Clinton in President Barack Obama's second-term Cabinet, has not offered details of his ideas but officials say they revolve around increasing pressure on Assad and his inner circle.

Kerry's first stop is London, where he will hold talks with British officials on a range of issues, from Afghanistan to the status of the Falkland Islands. Britain is in a major dispute with Argentina over the Falklands.

In German, Kerry will discuss trans-Atlantic issues with German youth in Berlin, where he spent time as a child as the son of an American diplomat posted to the divided Cold War city. He also will meet with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in the German capital.

In Paris, Kerry plans to discuss France's intervention in Mali, while in Rome he'll attend a meeting with Syrian opposition leaders.

U.S. officials have said the trip will be primarily a "listening tour" when it comes to Syria and won't result in immediate shifts in U.S. policy that has until now stayed clear of military support for the rebels fighting Assad.

Despite the numerous Middle East stops. Kerry will not travel to Israel or the Palestinian territories. He will wait to visit them when he accompanies Obama there in March.

Samsung?s New 8-Inch Tablet Takes on the iPad Mini

Samsung Electronics is taking yet another swipe at its longtime partner, Apple. The South Korean manufacturer on Saturday introduced a new 8-inch tablet, intended to compete directly with Apple?s 7.9-inch iPad Mini.

Like Samsung?s other tablets (and unlike the iPad), the Galaxy Tab 8.0 includes a stylus, runs Android software and is capable of showing multiple apps on the screen at the same time. Samsung?s previous tablets came in 7 inches and 10 inches, measured diagonally.

The Galaxy Tab 8.0 will be available for purchase in the second quarter of this year, Samsung said. The company did not list a price. The iPad Mini costs $330.

Apple?s iPad still dominates the tablet market, but tablets from Samsung and Amazon have been gaining traction. Over the last holiday season, Apple sold 22.9 million iPads, Amazon shipped 4.6 million tablets, and Samsung shipped 7.6 million tablets, according to Canalys, a research firm.

Quantum algorithm breakthrough: Performs a true calculation for the first time

Feb. 24, 2013 ? An international research group led by scientists from the University of Bristol, UK, and the University of Queensland, Australia, has demonstrated a quantum algorithm that performs a true calculation for the first time. Quantum algorithms could one day enable the design of new materials, pharmaceuticals or clean energy devices.

The team implemented the 'phase estimation algorithm' -- a central quantum algorithm which achieves an exponential speedup over all classical algorithms. It lies at the heart of quantum computing and is a key sub-routine of many other important quantum algorithms, such as Shor's factoring algorithm and quantum simulations.

Dr Xiao-Qi Zhou, who led the project, said: "Before our experiment, there had been several demonstrations of quantum algorithms, however, none of them implemented the quantum algorithm without knowing the answer in advance. This is because in the previous demonstrations the quantum circuits were simplified to make it more experimentally feasible. However, this simplification of circuits required knowledge of the answer in advance. Unlike previous demonstrations, we built a full quantum circuit to implement the phase estimation algorithm without any simplification. We don't need to know the answer in advance and it is the first time the answer is truly calculated by a quantum circuit with a quantum algorithm."

Professor Jeremy O'Brien, director of the Centre for Quantum Photonics at the University of Bristol said: "Implementing a full quantum algorithm without knowing the answer in advance is an important step towards practical quantum computing. It paves the way for important applications, including quantum simulations and quantum metrology in the near term, and factoring in the long term."

The research is published in Nature Photonics.
