In these challenging economic times, people are looking to new mediums and techniques to gain an edge in their job search. Social media is now becoming the premier landscape for job searching and hiring and if used right ? by young professionals for example ? it could lead not only to a job one desires but also allow one to advance in their business career.
Recently I read an interesting article about whether Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn can really help people find a job. The article noted how nowadays, a college degree and even years of experience do not necessarily translate into a good job.
In some ways, it could help your career ? you?ll develop a deeper connection with your colleagues. However, if you?re not careful, you could end up getting in trouble or even being fired for something you say or do online.
This is especially true for young professionals entering the work force for the first time in many cases. Young professionals may lack the experience many employers look for and to make matters worse, many must now compete with experienced job candidates let go as part of the economic crunch.
I?was thrilled to interview?Stephanie Wirihardja who just graduated with her bachelor?s degree in Interactive Arts and Technology from?Simon Fraser University in Canada.? She pursues a?global social media career in Vancouver. There is so much we can learn from this young professional.
Can you tell us about yourself?
I was born and raised in Jakarta, but moved to Vancouver eight years ago to continue with my education and join my sisters who were already studying here. In October 2012, I graduated from Simon Fraser University with an exciting degree in Interactive Arts and Technology.?I believe in continuous learning and have found a great place to do so. Since September 2011, I have been working at HootSuite, the top social media management system used by 79 of the Fortune 100 companies and 5+ million people worldwide. I journeyed from being an unpaid intern to my current role as the Community Manager, Higher Education in less than 1.5 years and have learned lots along the way. On top of my full-time commitment with HootSuite, I am also involved in the Marketing segment of Le Meridien Bali Jimbaran?to?ensure the quality of the collaterals and the story produced.?

What led you to focus on social media? What is the most challenging part of your role?
It is actually out of frustration. Back in 2006, I googled my name and the search results were all showing my sisters? names and only one of me. I was determined to change it and started looking at ways of how to do so. Like everyone else, I joined Facebook and discovered the benefits of getting connected back with my long lost friends and distant cousins. To me, that?s the most rewarding thing about social media.
?
People often forget the first word in ?social media? and ended up using platforms to advertise, or on the opposite of the spectrum, making the whole thing a public chatroom. Over the time, however, I have learned to sift through the ?noise? and get the nuggets. The biggest challenge for my role is to get on top of everything all the time. There are so many different things happening online all the time and sometimes it gets exhausting because there is no end to it all, so I had to learn to pause and tune myself out sometimes.
