New harmonies: Celebrating American roots music by s. Crawford The Smithsonian ?s new harmonies: celebrating American roots music traveling exhibit Chronicles the development of America ?s music. America ?s history is revealed through our music, which has come from a variety of cultural and ethnic heritage. Rhythms, harmonies and melodies have mixed to form new sounds. It has been expressed in many different types of music including folk, gospel, blues, Western country, zydeco, and bluegrass. Various commonly used instruments include guitar, fiddle, banjo, dulcimer, accordion, harmonica and drums. New harmonies exhibit is part of the Smithsonian Museum on Main Street series. These are one of a kind cultural projects which serve beb?re in America ?s small towns and rural areas. The events bring opportunities to the small museums that would otherwise lack the means and resources to attract these types of exhibits. They also allow Smithsonian share their collections with people who would otherwise not have access to them. Museum on Main Street partners with State Humanities Councils to bring the exhibits to local venues. Gaffney is the first of six South Carolina cities have been selected to host new harmonies. Other cities hosting the traveling exhibition is Conway, Allendale, Walhalla, Laurens, and Beaufort. New harmonies will open in Gaffney on April 9 and will run through May 29. Gaffney visitors Center & amp; Art Gallery, located at 210 Frederick Street will host exhibition. Photographs, recordings, lyrics and artist profiles are included in the exhibition. There will be many companion events in seven weeks, such as concerts, workshops and lectures. Events are free, although some will require prior registration. There will be a lunch and Learn series, will feature various musical artists who want to showcase their particular musical genre. There will be workshops where participants can create musical instruments as a Native American flute or a one-string banjo. Some of these workshops will be sponsored by local Cherokee County Alliance of Visual Arts (CAVA). The concerts will feature vocal and instrumental music. Some concerts are held in the auditorium limestone College and some will be outdoors in Michael Gaffney Log Cabin. A full overview of Gaffney events is available at the Visitor Center.
