Is it possible to get an RV that gets good gas mileage? I?m sure that you?ve read RV reviews of certain motorhomes and Recreational Vehicles (RVs) that tell everything about the RV but never mention fuel mileage. I?m here to let you know that you can definitely find an RV that gets decent miles per gallon, and there are ones that can do better, and some do worse. Here are my top 3.
Diesel Motorhomes
I think by now most realize that the basic diesel engine is a more efficient powerplant that the conventional gasoline engine. I won?t go into the technical details here, but suffice it to say that just buying a motorhome or an RV with a diesel engine can boost your rv gas mileage by 10% ? 20%. How many miles per gallon can you expect from diesel motorhomes? For a mid-sized diesel motorhome you can reasonably expect 10 ? 15 miles per gallon.
Camper Vans
Camper vans ? or Class B RVs ? are van-based motorhomes that have been outfitted as complete, self-contained RVs. For the more complete units, you can expect all of the comfort and functionality of a larger motorhome ? without the extreme size. Usually no more than 20 feet long, these camper vans can have gasoline or diesel engines and can be really quite efficient ? 12 ? 18 miles per gallon! The only real downsize ? aside from their smaller interiors ? is the fact that some RV parks will not let a class B RV park.
Newer Motorhomes
I?m sure that you won?t be surprised to hear that newer, more modern engines are a lot more fuel-efficient than their older counterparts. How much more efficient? The actual number varies greatly, but 10-% ? 40% gains in gas mileage are not unheard of. Modern features like electronic fuel injection alone can increase an engine?s efficiency (and performance) by a large margin, and most newer motorhomes (1990 ? to present) are fuel injected, with sophisticated electronic engine controls. Plus, newer motorhomes often have four-speed automatic overdrive transmissions with a lock-up torque converter that is loads more efficient than the old, standard three-speed units with open torque converters. Engine RPMs drop by over 25% ? meaning they use less fuel. A side benefit ? the drivetrains usually last longer!
Now you know that it is possible to buy a motorhome that can get reasonably decent gas mileage. And this is all the more amazing when you consider that you can haul your entire home with you and still get 15 miles per gallon over the open road!
