The instant Steven Epp as Moli?re steps out on the stage of the Paul Green Theatre to introduce the PlayMakers Repertory Company?s brand-new adaptation of the celebrated 17th century French actor and playwright?s 339-year-old play, The Imaginary Invalid, to a 21st century audience in Chapel Hill, it is clear that this is no average resurrection of a classic. Instead, Moli?re becomes a character in his own play; and the present is woven into the production ? often hilariously and often erratically, but always with an eye on the original story.

The story about Argon (also played by Steven Epp), a wealthy hypochondriac convinced he has every disease known to man (especially those that originate from bowel problems), is rife with sight gags and pratfalls and totally insane characters (spoiler: there?s not a normal one in the bunch). From the moment Argon receives his first shot of antiseptic spray from his nurse (Julie Fishell), it is clear that writer David Ball, who created this adaptation especially for PlayMakers, and director Dominique Serrand have a bona fide hit on their hands, a hilarious and fast-paced retelling of the comedy that was Moli?re?s last play ? and, ultimately, the one that killed him, because Moli?re died onstage while playing Argon on Feb. 7, 1673. Though there?s nothing funny about the French master of comedy dying onstage, there very definitely is something funny happening on the PlayMakers stage with this adaptation.

The play opens with Argon introducing his various maladies while his nurse (Julie Fishell) tells him what his bills are for the various tests. It is fairly certain that most people in the audience could relate to the shock Argon feels at the cost for invasive tests that ultimately tell him nothing about what is really wrong with him ? or how his quack of a doctor, Dr. Wachauvia (played by Jeffrey Blair Cornell), will cure each of the various ills. When Argon has had enough of the bills, he calls (and calls and yells) for his assistant Toinette, played by Molly Ward, and thus begins a constant parade of people in Argon?s life who clearly see through his hypochondria and use it to try to bilk him of his wealth.

One of those people who couldn?t care less about Argon?s money ? and is just as crazy as he is ? bounces onstage and throughout the play with a delightful zaniness. She is Argon?s daughter Little Angel, played with a zest and wide-eyed craziness by Katie Paxton. Paxton contorts into positions that put a pretzel to shame, and is so adept with facial expressions that it is a disappointment when she turns toward the other side of the stage and her fantastic elasticity cannot be seen.

Katie Paxton?s ability to play the angelic brat with a puppeteer?s deftness and a personality that mimics the monstrous horror of a Chucky doll brings histrionics to the first act that only escalate as the bizarre characters continue to do their pirouettes onstage. Little Angel?s love for Irving Luigi (played by Shakespeare veteran Josh Tobin) is what drives her, and that love (as most loves) is what makes her crazier than she already is. When Luigi finally arrives onstage, the combination of the two of them makes for hilarity personified.

Argon?s psychosomatic illnesses lend themselves well to jokes that most grade school children find irresistible: fart jokes, breast and sex jokes, pratfalls, and goofy characterizations. They also elicited plenty of laughs from the opening night/world premiere audience, though the loudest guffaws came from a totally unscripted comment made by Argon when a pre-teen made for the bathroom about midway through the first act.

?Where do you think you?re going?? Epp called out, never missing a beat and remaining in character as Argon. Everyone in the audience dissolved in laughter, though the boy didn?t seem to notice; and the play continued without interruption.

Moli?re?s ability to use satire to expose religious hypocrisy translates well to this period in time when most Americans are concentrating on the presidential elections; and David Ball?s new adaptation of The Imaginary Invalid works hard to expose one of the central issues in the current campaign for president: the obsession with the state of health care in the United States. From the moment Argon takes to his bed, nightgown flapping, it is ironically clear that the ?lesser? health-care workers (the nurse and the Bucket Boy, aptly portrayed by Nilan Johnson) are the wisest of the bunch.

The doctors are fools who work for Argon only because of his incredible wealth. They have no idea what is wrong with him, if anything, and simply play along with his imaginary ailments (one of which appears to be easily fixed, according to the nurse. Simply ?wash the dingus,? she says, over and over). Without revealing the ending of this farce, suffice it to say that it is a joke recognizable to all and, ironically, mirrors Moli?re?s own tragic end.

Chasing My Joy: Meeting with a sports nutritionist

On Friday last week I had an hour long nutrition ?tune-up? with Dina from Fuel4mance. A tune up includes: Our Nutrition Tune-Up is a one-time consultation for those seeking assistance with their daily eating program and competition day planning.?Whether it is fine tuning your nutrition to ensure good immune and cardiovascular health or overcoming a weight loss plateau, this service includes a customized eating program based on past medical health history, fitness level and future nutrition goals. ? Competition day nutrition is also included in this assessment when time allows. I was excited for this meeting because I have been looking to clean up my diet a bit and lean out for heavy training come spring.? I am at a ?healthy? weight but feel that I could lose about 15 pounds and be able to swimbikerun easier. Since I sort of thought that Ironman training would help knock some pounds off (It did not?.bummer) I thought I would call in the professionals. Dina was super nice and fun to talk to, her main advice was to not count calories or do crazy diets but to work on metabolic efficiency (i.e. not spiking your blood sugar). I don?t want to give everything away since this is her job and everyone?s nutrition needs are different but I am changing my diet to see how I feel and if I can drop a few pounds.

The biggest change is getting rid of grains and extra crap from my diet.?

I am not going low carb, I am still eating plenty of low-fat dairy and fruit, I am just avoiding breads, rice and starchy veggies. This will be a bit of a challenge for me because I really like grains and starchy veggies (goodbye butternut squash, pumpkin and sweet potato). I am going to give it a try for two weeks to see how I feel, if I have enough energy to get through 15+ hours of training and if I drop a few pounds. Have you ever worked with a nutritionist or wish you could? Did you find that it created a big change in your diet, body or life?

Water, fire and darkness: NYC after the superstorm

In an attempt to lessen damage from saltwater to the subway system and the electrical network beneath the city's financial district, New York City's main utility cut power to about 6,500 customers in lower Manhattan. But a far wider swath of the city was hit with blackouts caused by flooding and transformer explosions. (AP Photo)

NEW YORK (AP) ? New York City awakened Tuesday to a flooded subway system, shuttered financial markets and hundreds of thousands of people without power a day after a wall of seawater and high winds slammed into the city, destroying buildings and flooding tunnels.

Scenes of the damage were everywhere. At least 50 flooded homes in Queens caught fire and were destroyed. A hospital removed patients on stretchers and 20 babies from neonatal intensive care, some on respirators operating on battery power.

Where usually bustling crowds and traffic jams streamed through sidewalks, streets and subways, they were largely empty. And high above midtown, the broken boom of a crane continued to dangle precariously over a neighborhood.

"Oh, Jesus. Oh, no," said Faye Schwartz, 65, Tuesday morning as she surveyed the damage in her Brooklyn neighborhood, where cars were strewn like leaves, planters deposited in intersections and green metal Dumpsters tossed on their sides.

The storm was once Hurricane Sandy but combined with two wintry systems to become a huge hybrid storm whose center smashed ashore late Monday in New Jersey. New York City was perfectly positioned to absorb the worst of its storm surge ? a record 13 feet.

Water lapped over the seawall in Battery Park City, flooding rail yards, subway tracks, tunnels and roads. Rescue workers floated bright orange rafts down flooded downtown streets, while police officers rolled slowly down the street with loudspeakers telling people to go home.

"We knew that this was going to be a very dangerous storm, and the storm has met our expectations," Mayor Michael Bloomberg said. "This is a once-in-a-long-time storm."

In Queens, nearly 200 firefighters tried to contain an enormous blaze that consumed 50 homes in the Breezy Point neighborhood. They had to use a boat to make rescues, firefighters told WABC-TV. They climbed an awning to reach about 25 trapped people and take them down to a boat.

Officials weren't immediately able to pin down the cause of the blaze.

Water surged into two major commuter tunnels ? the Brooklyn Battery and the Queens Midtown ? along with seven subway tunnels under the East River. The agency is assessing damage and will restore the system as quickly as it can, MTA Chairman Joseph Lhota said.

The rains and howling winds left a crane hanging off a luxury high-rise in midtown Manhattan, causing the evacuation of hundreds from a posh hotel and other buildings. Inspectors were climbing 74 flights of stairs to examine the crane hanging from the $1.5 billion building.

After a backup generator failed, New York University's Tisch Hospital began evacuating more than 200 patients to other facilities, including 20 babies from neonatal intensive care, some of them on respirators operating on battery power.

Without power, the hospital had no elevator service, meaning patients had to be carefully carried down staircases and outside into the weather. Gusts of wind blew their blankets as nurses held IVs and other equipment.

About 670,000 homes and businesses were without power late Monday in the city and suburban Westchester County.

In Schwartz's Brooklyn neighborhood of Red Hook, residents who ignored a mandatory evacuation order awoke to debris-strewn streets and a continued blackout. About 2 inches of mucky dirt and leaves covered streets crisscrossed by downed power lines after water sloshed 12 blocks inland.

The doors of the Fairway grocery store were blown out. Several cars left in the parking lot were shifted by flood waters overnight and were left crammed door to door.

Schwartz and her husband rode out the storm on the third floor of the residences above the Fairway and said white-capped flood waters reached at least 3 feet around the building.

"It was scary how fast the water came up," she said.

The facade of a four-story Manhattan building in the Chelsea neighborhood crumbled and collapsed suddenly, leaving the lights, couches, cabinets and desks inside visible from the street. No one was hurt, although some of the falling debris hit a car.

The city shut all three of its airports, its subways, schools, stock exchanges, Broadway theaters and closed several bridges and tunnels Monday as the weather worsened. By evening, a record 13-foot storm surge was threatening Manhattan's southern tip and utilities deliberately darkened part of the borough to avoid storm damage.

It could be several days to a week before all residents who lost power during the storm get their lights back, Miksad said.

On Tuesday, the New York Stock Exchange was to be closed again ? the first time it's been closed for two consecutive days due to weather since 1888, when a blizzard struck the city.

At 4 a.m., few people were out on the streets. Times Square was lit but empty of people. Round-the-clock restaurants and bars that would have been wrapping up after last call were closed. Only a handful of taxis plied the streets ? but there was an abundance of emergency and police vehicles.

Uptown, windows of apartments and businesses glowed. But to cross through midtown was to be swallowed by darkness. Only a few emergency or backup lights appeared in buildings.

Late Monday, an explosion at a substation at 14th Street and FDR Drive contributed to the power outages. No one was injured, and ConEd did not know whether the explosion was caused by flooding or by flying debris.

Earlier in the day, another 1 million customers lost power in New York City, the northern suburbs and coastal Long Island, where floodwaters swamped cars, downed trees and put neighborhoods under water.

At least six people were killed in the New York City area, most by falling trees. The dead included two boys, ages 11 and 13, who were killed when a tree fell on a home in suburban Westchester County.

On coastal Long Island, floodwaters swamped cars, downed trees and put neighborhoods under water as beachfronts and fishing villages bore the brunt of the storm. A police car was lost rescuing 14 people from the popular resort Fire Island.

Time-lapse views from space show Sandy's enormity

The denser the place, the greater the racial integration?or, in other words, cities tend to be more racially diverse while less dense areas generally have higher percentages of white people, according to this chart from Bill Rankin at racialcartography.net. Rankin used 2000 U.S. Census data to graph percentages indicating the existence of racial and ethnic groups based on a place's population density. Each color correlates with a different race, and the accompanying dotted line shows the percentage of the overall population the group accounts for.

Hurricane Sandy Prompts Paywall Takedowns at The New York ...

As ?Frankenstorm? Hurricane Sandy bears down on the east coast, a few online news sources have decided to make their content freely available to everyone with an internet connection. That means tearing down those paywalls

The New York Times is making all of its content free for the duration of the storm. A spokesperson had this to say to Poynter:

?The gateway has been removed from the entire site and all apps. The plan is to keep it that way until the weather emergency is over.?

So there you go. For the time being, you will no longer be cut off after reading 10 articles on the site. All Hurricane Sandy news (and any other news on the site) is free for all. This isn?t the first time that the Times has made this move. They did the same thing for Hurricane Irene last year.

The NYT isn?t the only publication suspending paywalls for the storm. Wall Street Journal digital editor Raju Narisetti tweeted the news that his publication would also be stripping the paywalls starting Monday, October 29th:

We can debate the effectiveness of the paywall strategy until we?re blue in the face ? but this week is not the time. When an unprecedented storm threatens millions of citizens, it?s simply a nice and patriotic move to make information accessible to the broadest swath of people. Be safe, everyone.

Giants beat Tigers in 10 innings for Series sweep

DETROIT (AP) -- Marco Scutaro singled home the tiebreaking run in the 10th inning, and the San Francisco Giants beat the Detroit Tigers 4-3 on Sunday night to complete a four-game sweep and win their second World Series title in three years.

Ryan Theriot, who went hitless for St. Louis in Game 7 of last year's Series, singled softly into right field off Phil Coke opening the 10th.

Brandon Crawford sacrificed, nearly bunting the ball past Coke. Angel Pagan struck out and Scutaro singled into short center field as Theriot slid home ahead of Austin Jackson's throw.

Pablo Sandoval, who hit three homers in Game 1, was selected Series MVP. He was 1 for 5 in Game 4, dropping his Series average to .500 (8 for 16).

Santiago Casilla got the final out of the ninth for the win, and Sergio Romo struck out the side in the 10th for his third save, freezing Triple Crown winner Miguel Cabrera with a called third strike to end it. The Giants ran out of the dugout and bullpen to celebrate between the mound and second base.

Of the 24 teams to take 3-0 Series leads, 21 swept and three won in five games.

Delmon Young hit a tying home run off Matt Cain in the sixth. Cabrera and San Francisco's Buster Posey homered, marking the first time both reigning batting champions went deep in the same Series game.

San Francisco's Brandon Belt hit an RBI triple off the right-field wall in the second inning following a ground-rule double by Hunter Pence. But on a night when the wind was gusting to right field at up to 25 mph, Cabrera put Detroit ahead for the first time in the Series with a wild-blown, two-run drive in the third.

Cabrera's drive, on an 86 mph breaking ball, sailed over Pence, who thought he would catch it but ran out of room in front of the right-field wall on the cool, blustery night. It drove Jackson, who had walked with one out, and ended Detroit's 20-inning scoreless streak.

San Francisco had not trailed since losing Game 4 of the NL championship series, when the Giants fell into a 3-1 series deficit against St. Louis.

With a light rain falling, Scutaro reached on a chopper to third leading off the sixth and, one out later, Max Scherzer hung an 82 mph breaking ball. Posey drove it down the left-field line, where it stayed a few feet fair and landed a couple of rows over the wall for a 3-2 lead.

That advantage didn't last long. Young sent an opposite-field, no-doubt drive into the right-field stands in the bottom half, setting off cheers among the crowd of 42,152, with many fans waving white rally towels.

Andy Dirks followed with a single and Jhonny Peralta hit a drive that Gregor Blanco caught against the wall in left.

After watching Barry Zito, Madison Bumgarner and Ryan Vogelsong each allow one run or none in the first three games, Cain gave up three runs and five hits in seven innings with five strikeouts and two walks.

Scherzer, pitching on nine days' rest, gave up three runs and seven hits in 6 1-3 innings, struck out eight and walked none. After he left with a runner on second and one out in the seventh, lefty Drew Smyly retired Brandon Crawford on a flyout and righty Octavio Dotel induced a groundout from Angel Pagan.

Smyly, Dotel and Coke combined for 2 2-3 innings of hitless relief before the 10th.

Jeremy Affeldt followed Cain and struck out four in a row before Peralta hit a ninth-inning drive to center that the wind carried and was caught by Pagan on the warning track

Casilla relieved and hit Omar Infante with a pitch, breaking his left hand. Danny Worth ran for Infante and Gerald Laird hit into a forceout.

Sandoval was 1 for 5, dropping his Series average to .500 (8 for 16). He also made a nimble play to throw out Quintin Berry on a bunt to third.

Detroit's Prince Fielder was hitless in four at-bats, dropping to 1 for 14 in the World Series (.071) and 1 for 25 (.040) against right-handers in the postseason.

Detroit has lost seven straight postseason games.

On a 44-degree night, fans bundled up at Comerica Park and some players wore caps with earflaps during batting practice.

Detroit scratched catcher Alex Avila, playing with a sore right arm since he was hit by a foul tip in the opener, and replaced him with Laird. Infante moved up to eighth in the batting order.

Storm leads companies to postpone earnings reports

NEW YORK (AP) ? With Hurricane Sandy bearing down on the East Coast Monday and financial markets shut down, a number of major U.S. companies have postponed quarterly earnings.

Companies including Pfizer Inc., Thomson Reuters Corp. and NRG Energy Inc. have delayed earnings reports to later this week. Pfizer, which was due to report Tuesday, will now announce results on Thursday. Thomson Reuters, also originally scheduled for Tuesday, will report Friday. NRG will also report on Friday instead of Wednesay.

Other companies delaying their announcements:

? Power provider Entergy Corp. will report on Nov. 5 instead of Tuesday.

? Biopharmaceutical Acorda Therapeutics Inc. will report results on Wednesday instead of Tuesday.

? Maintenance products distributor MSC Industrial Direct Co. will report results on Wednesday instead of Tuesday.

? Mortgage insurer Radian Group Inc. will report earnings on Thursday instead of Tuesday.

Other companies, including Burger King Worldwide Inc., are reporting as planned. Luggage maker Tumi Holdings Inc. said it will report its third-quarter results on Monday, but canceled its scheduled conference call because of Sandy.

The New York Stock Exchange, Nasdaq and CME Group in Chicago will remain closed Monday and possibly Tuesday. Trading on the NYSE was last closed on Sept. 11, 2001, and last closed for a weather related event in 1985, for Hurricane Gloria.

If the exchange remains closed Tuesday, it would be the first weather-related consecutive-day closing since 1888, when a blizzard left drifts of snow as high as 40 feet.

Sandy strengthened before dawn Monday and stayed on a predicted path toward Washington, Baltimore, Philadelphia and New York ? putting it on a collision course with two other weather systems that would create a superstorm with the potential for havoc over 800 miles from the East Coast to the Great Lakes.

Lower parts of Manhattan around the Financial District are under mandatory evacuation orders.

Baseball: Leyland stays humble after Giants tame toothless Tigers

DETROIT (Reuters) - Detroit Tigers manager Jim Leyland offered no excuses for his club's meek four-game surrender to the San Francisco Giants in the World Series.

"We got beat," he told reporters after the Giants completed the series sweep by beating the Tigers 4-3 in 10 innings at Comerica Park on Sunday.

"You can't sit up here and try to find some reason or excuse. They beat us. They earned it. We didn't hit enough. Obviously we had five hits again tonight," he added.

"So you just turn the page and move on. Congratulations to the Giants. They did a fantastic job."

Sunday's victory capped a stunning Fall Classic blowout, in which the Tigers were outscored 16-6 over the four contests and, at one point, were held scoreless for 20 straight innings.

After sweeping the New York Yankees in four straight games in the American League Championship Series, few expected Detroit's potent bats to fall silent so quickly in the pursuit of a first World Series victory since 1984.

Triple Crown winner Miguel Cabrera had three hits and slugger Prince Fielder just one in the series as Detroit was shut out in two of the four games.

Leyland, who won the World Series in 1997 as manager of the then-Florida Marlins, took solace in the fact his team were champions of the American League.

"If somebody told me in spring training that we would be in the World Series, I would have had to say I'll take that," he said.

The Tigers, who won the Central Division with an 88-74 record, beat the Oakland Athletics 3-2 in the five-game AL Division Series before breezing past the Yankees.

The 67-year-old Leyland admitted his club had been "a little inconsistent all year".

"We played pretty good when we had to get the division, and we obviously played pretty good through the first two rounds of the playoffs," he said.

"We got to the World Series and we just sputtered offensively."

Leyland said that although he was dejected at the loss, the feeling would not linger, adding that he really wanted to record a World Series win for 83-year-old Tigers owner Mike Ilitch.

"I'm disappointed," he said. "We're going to say our goodbyes tonight. I'm disappointed for Mr Ilitch. We wanted this bad for him.

"But when you've been in the game a long time, somebody wins and somebody loses. I'm going to go home and I'll hear some talk about it. 'You guys were not very good in the World Series,' and all this and that, but I'm pretty much able to turn the page."

Rubio leaves Romney bus after daughter?s car accident

Rubio stands outside a Florida Highway Patrol car after leaving the Romney motorcade (Justin Sullivan/Getty Im??

LAKEWOOD CREST, Fla.?Florida Sen. Marco Rubio abruptly dropped off Mitt Romney's campaign bus just east of Tampa on Saturday evening after word that his 12-year-old daughter had been injured in a car accident in Miami and airlifted to a local hospital.

According to his office, Rubio, who had been campaigning with Romney in Florida today, was alerted about his daughter Amanda's accident just after leaving the stage at Romney's second rally of the day in Kissimmee, according his spokesman Alex Conant.

According to Conant, Amanda Rubio, who is the oldest of the senator's four children, was airlifted to Miami Children's Hospital and is listed in stable condition. He did not provide any further details about the accident.

But Rubio still boarded Romney's bus as it headed toward the third and final event of the day in Land O'Lakes, Fla?and stayed on the bus for more than an hour. Around 6:45pm, Romney's motorcade abruptly pulled off Interstate 4, and Rubio was seen exiting Romney's campaign bus.

A moment later, Rubio hopped over a highway barricade, where a Florida Highway Patrol car waited. After standing outside the car for a few minutes, Rubio jumped into the patrol car, which sped away with its lights flashing. His office said the senator was en route to Miami.

The Romney campaign offered no immediate comment.

Movie Review: 'Fun Size' ? CBS Philly

By Bill Wine
KYW Newsradio 1060

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) ? Early on, the film?s setting, Cleveland, is described as the ?mistake by the lake.? So let?s dub this dreadful comedy a ?mistake in every take.?

The huge difference between fun size and fun is vividly demonstrated by Fun Size, a bargain-basement teen comedy that?s short on size and fun.

Wait, did I say teen comedy?? Yes, because that?s what it turns out to be.

But although the script is aimed at teens and is consumed with particular teenage concerns (even though? it lives at the far edge of its PG-13 border where R beckons and renders much of its humor inappropriate), it reaches out to children and is being sold as a family film.

1c2bd1 Movie Review: Fun Size

(1? stars out of 4)

It?s not.

The PG-13 is for ?crude and suggestive material, partying, and language.? And yet it?s being marketed as a Halloween-night comedy:? of course tweens and young children will want to see it.

That?s why so much of the profanity and sexual references, however mild, seem inappropriate for the target audience. The disconnect between content and marketing is gaping.

It?s set throughout Halloween night, as teens party and youngsters go out trick-or-treating.

Victoria Justice plays Wren, a sardonic high school senior who narrates and is looking forward to going off to college ?- NYU, her recently deceased father?s alma mater, is where she?s headed ? so that she can get away from her dysfunctional family.

When she?s invited to a Halloween party by Aaron, the guy she has a crush on (Thomas McDonell), she is understandably upset when her mother (Chelsea Handler) tells her to take her little brother, Albert (Jackson Nicoll), trick-or-treating while she goes out with her much younger boyfriend.

Wren goes to the party instead, where she promptly loses track of Albert, who disappears among the many costumed trick-or-treaters out on the street.

So she borrows a car and heads out along with her best friend, April (Jane Levy), as well as two guys, Peng (Osric Chau) and Roosevelt (Thomas Mann), the latter a debate captain who has a huge crush on her, to find her younger brother.

What this movie is doing on theatre screens is mystifying: it plays like an episode of a middling television series that doesn?t even exist.

Josh Schwartz, the debuting director who created such TV series as ?Gossip Girl? and ?The O.C.,? also served as one of the producers, working from a script by Max Werner that?s strained and unfunny from the get-go and burdened with a severe case of the cutes.

If there is a moment of recognizable reality in character or circumstance, I missed it.? To take one glaring example among many: when a child goes missing, just about everyone reacts as if it were a misplaced utensil.

Some teens may relate to the situation, but most will recognize that something about the whole enterprise is just out of whack.

So we?ll wear a costume of 1? stars out of 4 for the misadventure-in-babysitting misfire, Fun Size, a wrongheaded trick and a tasteless treat.

Apple loses again in Dutch suit against Samsung

(AP) ? A Dutch court has again ruled against Apple Inc. in a suit against South Korea's Samsung Electronics Co., saying that Galaxy tablet computers don't infringe an Apple patent on touch screen interfaces.

The Dutch case is one of many Apple is pursuing against Samsung in their reciprocal patent war. If Apple had been successful in the Netherlands, it could have disrupted Samsung's ability to distribute in Europe through the port of Rotterdam.

Apple lost a request for a provisional ruling in August 2011, and an appeal in January. The Hague District Court's ruling published Thursday is a full-fledged civil suit on the same point. Like British and German courts, the Dutch court found that the touch screen interface Samsung's Galaxy tabs use does not violate Apple's patents.

Dow Chemical to slash 2,400 jobs, close 20 plants

MIDLAND, Mich. (AP) ? The Dow Chemical Co. will eliminate about 2,400 jobs and close roughly 20 manufacturing facilities as part of a restructuring plan aimed at coping with slowing economic growth in Europe and elsewhere.

The manufacturing giant said Tuesday that the job cuts amount to 5 percent of the company's workforce worldwide.

Dow expects the strategy will result in roughly $500 million in annual cost savings by the end of 2014.

The company also plans to slash capital spending and investments. It expects that will save an additional $500 million.

All told, Dow anticipates it will save $2.5 billion, including other cost-cutting measures.

Dow produces materials used in nearly every business sector and region of the world, leaving it exposed to shifts in global economic growth.

The company's business has been hurt by Europe's debt crisis and slower growth in China. Manufacturers, construction businesses and some transportation customers have reduced demand for Dow products. The company's coatings and materials for electronic devices also have been weak.

"The reality is we are operating in a slow-growth environment in the near-term and, while these actions are difficult, they demonstrate our resolve to tightly manage operations particularly in Europe and mitigate the impact of current market dynamics," Andrew Liveris, Dow's chairman and CEO, said in a statement.

Rival DuPont Co. on Tuesday reported a big drop in quarterly profit and missed Wall Street expectations. The company announced a restructuring that includes 1,500 layoffs.

Over the next two years, Dow plans to close certain manufacturing facilities in the U.S., Belgium, The Netherlands, Spain, the United Kingdom and Japan.

The company projects it will book between 50 and 60 cents per share in charges related to the restructuring in the fourth quarter of this year. That includes a write-down of assets related to its Dow Kokam LLC joint venture ? a move the company is making due to weak global demand for lithium-ion batteries.

Despite the sweeping cost reductions, Dow plans to continue to invest in areas where it believes that it can clearly expand its profit margins. Those include Dow AgroSciences, Dow Electronic Materials and its Sadara and U.S. Gulf Coast investments.

"Taken on the whole, Dow's strategy remains intact, and our long-term growth fundamentals are strong," Liveris said.

Dow shares ended regular trading down $1.19, or 4 percent, at $28.55 amid a broad market decline. The stock slipped another 24 cents to $28.31 in extended trading.

VuPoint Solutions Magic Wand PDS-ST441-VP

A close cousin to the more expensive Editors' Choice VuPoint Solutions Magic Wand Wi-Fi PDSWF-ST44-VP , the VuPoint Solutions Magic Wand PDS-ST441-VP leaves out the Wi-Fi that lets you check scan quality on a smartphone or tablet. However, it adds a one-inch color LCD that shows the image on the scanner itself, which is a lot better than not having any way to see the scan at all. If you like the idea of a completely self-contained wand scanner that can both scan and let you see the results without having to carry anything else with you, it may be your preferred choice.

As with all wand scanners, the PDS-ST441-VP scans without a computer, saving the results in this case directly to a microSD or microSDHC card. Unlike most, it doesn't make you wait until you've moved the files to your computer before you can see the results. Not only does it let you see the scan on its own LCD, it lets you zoom in to 2x, 4x, or 8x size to see details, like whether you can actually read text on a page you just scanned.

The ability to zoom in is a notable improvement compared with, for example, the preview feature on the Pandigital Portable Wand Scanner with Feeder Dock (PanScn09) , which also offers a display, but doesn't let you zoom in. Keep in mind that just having a display on the Pandigital scanner is a big improvement over not having any display at all. That puts even the Pandigital scanner way ahead of much of the competition, and the PDS-ST441-VP way ahead of the PanScn09.

Note that VuPoint Solutions offers the PDS-ST441-VP in several colors, with slightly different model names. The PDS-ST441BU-VP, for example, is blue. Aside from the color, however, all of the ST441 models are identical.

Basics, Setup, and Scanning
As with any wand scanner, the PDS-ST441-VP is highly portable, at 1.1 by 10.1 by 1.2 inches (HWD) and 6.9 ounces, complete with two AA batteries. Like other current-generation VuPoint Solutions wand scanners, it offers a 900 pixel per inch (ppi) optical resolution and comes with Abbyy FineReader 9.0 Sprint, a reasonably capable OCR program. Depending on where you buy the scanner, it may or may not come with a memory card to scan to, so you might want to check with the seller and, if necessary, get a card when you buy the scanner. Fortunately, prices on microSD and microSDHC memory cards are low enough so that won't add much to the cost.

Setup is typical for the breed. Install the two supplied AA batteries and plug in a memory card with a maximum 32GB capacity. Installing FineReader on your computer is optional.

Scanning is absolutely standard for a wand scanner. Start with the scanner at the top or side of a page and then sweep down or across. Rollers on the bottom make it easy to sweep smoothly and evenly in most cases. However, I found it hard to sweep smoothly with 4 by 6 photos, presumably because the photo is thick enough that the part of the scanner that sticks out beyond the width of the photo is suspended above the surface, keeping the rollers from doing their job.

In addition to letting you view your scans, menu choices on the PDS-ST441-VP let you set the scanner resolution to 300, 600, or 900 ppi; set the file format to JPG or image PDF; and set the color mode to color or mono (which translates to grayscale, rather than black and white). Very much worth mention is that the bright, backlit color LCD is easy to read, and the menu choices are mostly self-explanatory.

To scan, you simply choose your settings, press the Scan button, and move the scanner across or down the page. If you move too fast, the Scan status light will change from green to red, so you know you need to rescan without even looking at the result. The only time the light turned red in my tests was when I was scanning at 900 ppi, which requires a slower scan.

Once you've finished scanning, whether one page or several, you can use the menu commands to view a file and zoom in on it. The one-inch LCD shows less of the page than I'd like to see at once when it's zoomed in. However, you can navigate through the image, which lets you make sure that text, for example, is readable across a line, or that at least part of each line is readable as you scroll from the top of the page to the bottom.

Results
The application software that the PDS-ST441-VP comes with makes the scanner suitable for both optical character recognition (OCR) and document management applications. On my tests, it did impressively well with both.

On our standard OCR tests, using the scanner's default 300 ppi for the scans, the combination of the scanner and FineReader Sprint read Times New Roman text at 12 points and Arial text at sizes as small as 8 points without a mistake. At 600 and 900 ppi, it read both fonts at sizes as small at 5 points without a mistake. Just as important for both OCR and document management, although the scanner saves each page as a separate file, FineReader makes it easy to combine multiple pages into a single Word file or searchable PDF file.

Although the scanner doesn't come with photo software, I tried scanning some 4-by-6s just to get a sense of the photo scan capability. As with other wand scanners, the quality isn't terrific. It will give you recognizable images of photos, which can certainly be useful if you're scanning, say, a magazine page with photos, but it's not suitable for much more than that.

The biggest competitor to this scanner is VuPoint's own Wi-Fi wand scanner, the PDSWF-ST44-VP. Both scanners come with the same software, and both have the advantage over most of the competition of letting you see your scans on the spot, while you can rescan if you need to. For anyone who has a smartphone, the Wi-Fi version is the obvious choice, since it will let you see your scans on a bigger screen. For those who don't carry a smartphone, however, or would rather spend a little less, the VuPoint Solutions Magic Wand PDS-ST441-VP is a highly attractive alternative.

Creativity 'a mental illness'

Creativity is often part of a mental illness, with writers particularly susceptible, according to a study of more than a million people.

Writers had a higher risk of anxiety and bipolar disorders, schizophrenia, unipolar depression, and substance abuse, the Swedish researchers at the Karolinska Institute found.

They were almost twice as likely as the general population to kill themselves.

The dancers and photographers were also more likely to have bipolar disorder.

It is important that we do not romanticise people with mental health problems, who are too often portrayed as struggling creative geniuses?

End Quote Beth Murphy The mental health charity Mind

As a group, those in the creative professions were no more likely to suffer from psychiatric disorders than other people.

But they were more likely to have a close relative with a disorder, including anorexia and, to some extent, autism, the Journal of Psychiatric Research reports.

Lead researcher Dr Simon Kyaga said the findings suggested disorders should be viewed in a new light and that certain traits might be beneficial or desirable.

For example, the restrictive and intense interests of someone with autism and the manic drive of a person with bipolar disorder might provide the necessary focus and determination for genius and creativity.

Similarly, the disordered thoughts associated with schizophrenia might spark the all-important originality element of a masterpiece.

Troubled minds

  • Novelist Virginia Woolf, who wrote A Room of One's Own and To the Lighthouse, had depression and drowned herself
  • Fairytale author Hans Christian Andersen, who wrote The Ugly Duckling and The Little Mermaid, had depression
  • US author and journalist Ernest Hemingway, who wrote For Whom the Bell Tolls, had depression and killed himself with a shotgun
  • Author and playwright Graham Greene, who wrote the novel Brighton Rock, had bipolar disorder

Dr Kyaga said: "If one takes the view that certain phenomena associated with the patient's illness are beneficial, it opens the way for a new approach to treatment.

"In that case, the doctor and patient must come to an agreement on what is to be treated, and at what cost.

"In psychiatry and medicine generally there has been a tradition to see the disease in black-and-white terms and to endeavour to treat the patient by removing everything regarded as morbid."

Beth Murphy, head of information at Mind, said bipolar disorder personality traits could be beneficial to those in creative professions, but it may also be that people with bipolar disorder are more attracted to professions where they can use their creative skills.

"It is important that we do not romanticise people with mental health problems, who are too often portrayed as struggling creative geniuses.

"We know that one in four people will be diagnosed with a mental health problem this year and that these individuals will come from a range of different backgrounds, professions and walks of live. Our main concern is that they get the information and support that they need and deserve."

Firefox 16

After a somewhat fitful initial release, Firefox 16 (actually 16.0.1) is now the prevailing version of Mozilla's independent, open-source browser. You might say that the update only adds new features for developers, but those in turn can mean new Web capabilities for ordinary browser users. Case in point: the browser's new support for CSS Transformations and Gradients can add visual effects to pages, and its new support for Web apps means sites can shed their browser skin and live as standalone programs on your desktop.

Partly because of its constant improvements and innovations and partly because it's not the product of a large corporation but rather an international open-source-contributed effort, I'm still a big Firefox fan. ?And there's not much that other browsers can do that Firefox can't. It has lots of HTML5 support, the best extension and customization capabilities, and a unique "Panorama" tab organizer. While you can get all this Mozilla goodness for Windows, Mac, or Linux, I evaluated the Windows version for this review. On the mobile side, you can read our review of review of Firefox for Android.

Firefox for the desktop's big interface changes all came along in version 4. That was when Mozilla started emulating Google's Chrome (free, 4.5 stars) Web browser in JavaScript speed and minimalist interface, as other Windows browser competitors Internet Explorer 9 (free,? 3.5 stars) and Opera 12 (free, 3.5 stars) have done, too.

Firefox 16 can nearly match Chrome on JavaScript speed, and holds its own when it comes to HTML5 support and a trimmed down interface that gives the Web page center stage. But when compared side-by-side with Chrome, Firefox falls just a bit short in terms of HTML5 support and whiz-bang features like Chrome Instant, which loads pages from your history before you even finish typing their addresses or search terms in the address bar. It also lacks Chrome's integrated support for Adobe Flash and PDFs.

But while we're still waiting for "Do Not Track" privacy support in Chrome, it's been available in Firefox since version 9. Firefox 7 added better use of memory by the browser itself, addressing one of the most common complaints I've heard about Firefox over the past few years. It also sped up startup times, in which Firefox has long trailed competing browsers.

Install
A simple 16MB download gets you the Firefox 16 Windows installer. When you run it you'll lose your old version of Firefox. The latest Firefox is available for Mac (30MB) and Linux (17MB) as well as for Windows 7, Vista, and XP?the last of which even Internet Explorer 9 (Free, 4 stars) can't claim. You can import bookmarks from any other installed browsers on first run, but setup is as uncomplicated as it is for Chrome. Firefox also now makes it easy to choose a search provider other than Google, but surprisingly, not as easy as Chrome does. Mozilla also offers a Firefox with Bing version, which uses Microsoft's Web search built in.

Mozilla has been working towards silent updates for Firefox since at least the summer of 2010. And starting with version 15 this effort finally came to fruition?you no longer need to explicitly update Firefox; it happens after a restart of the browser without an interrupting update procedure. The Firefox installation gets around Windows' User Access dialog in a more orthodox way than Google Chrome's automatic updates. Chrome installs in a non-standard, non program folder, which some consider a potential security risk. Firefox, however, uses a "service" rather than a standard program process for the update to avoid the UAC dialog.

Interface
Firefox's interface is in line with the trend of "less is more"?less space taken up by the browser frame and controls and more space for Web pages. The page tabs have moved above the address bar, and as with Opera 12, there's just a single menu option in the form of the orange Firefox button at top left. You can re-enable the standard menus by hitting the Alt key.

Firefox's new-tab page has tiles for most-accessed sites on the new-tab page, and includes lots of settings on its default home page. As in most other browsers, you can customize what's on these thumbnails, and they shrink and enlarge as you resize the browser window. You can also remove sites and pin and unpin them to the new-tab page. But you can't specify which sites to include: They're chosen by frequency of your visits.

It's not quite up to the level of Safari's beautiful 3D Top Sites page or Opera's Speed Dial, which even offers live information on its pinned tiles. Most other browsers let you re-open closed sessions?Firefox's default home page lets you do this, but I'd like to see the choice on the new-tab page, too. If you don't want the tile view, a button at top right turns it off, reverting to the plain white, blank tab page.

The Home button is to the right of the search bar, and a bookmark button appears to the right of that. That bookmark button only appears when you don't want the bookmark toolbar taking up browser window space. This gives you one-click access to frequently needed Web addresses. But I wish that, like IE's star button, the button also let you see recent page history. You can still call up the full bookmark manager, which lets you do things like importing bookmarks from other browsers, search, and organize. And the full History dialog does let you see all recent visits, but it's not as convenient as IE's star dropdown.

Firefox is one of the last remaining browsers to still use separate address and search boxes, which is good for those who like to keep those two activities separate. That doesn't mean, however, that a search won't work in the address bar, aka the "awesome bar." That tool, which drops down suggestions from your history and favorites whenever you start typing, was pioneered by Firefox and copied by all other browsers. Another tweak is that when one of its suggested sites is already open in a tab, you can click on a "Switch to tab" link, preventing you from opening more tabs unnecessarily?a useful tweak.

As part of its leading extensibility, Firefox has always been the browser most open to allowing different search providers, including specialized search like shopping, reference, or social. It was one of the first to support the OpenSearch format. The other popular browsers now do so, too, but Firefox can automatically detect search services on a page and let you add them from the search bar. And Firefox's built-in Twitter search option makes it easy to find Twitter personalities worth following as well as popular photos and videos on the social network.

Does staying sober become normal?

Morning All, or afternoon depending on where you are!

I'm new to the sober lifestyle but so far so good. This Thursday I will be at 5 weeks. Not drinking is starting feel ok, I don't think about it much or look for it. I get the odd challenge here and there but overall I'm quite surprised at how I have adapted to the change. It helps being in a healthy environment at home where my wife hardly drinks at all and my kids remind me everyday why I should stay sober.

I notice there are posters on here who have been sober 1,2 or even 10 years. How does that feel? When you reach 2 years sober does it feel totally normal not to drink. Do you ever doubt yourself? Do you ever feel the urge to drink?

I used to smoke cigarettes and gave them up about 4 years ago. Every now and then I still get the urge to have a cigarette. It generally passes but if I'm in certain situation (which funny enough don't happen anymore!) like out with friends having a drink then I sometimes get tempted but I never give in. Is that what it's like to be long term sober? Do you still, now and then, get a craving?

Just wondering.

Congrats on your sober time. I'm so happy it is going well for you so far.

I will have 14 1/2 years of sobriety, and it feels like the norm. I don't know when it changed from being something I didn't do (not drinking) to just my normal life, but it was in the first few years. I struggled with cravings for awhile, so it didn't feel normal not to drink until those cravings were finally lifted. Now I rarely even notice if someone is drinking. Nor do I desire it

Every now and again there is a fleeting thought, but that is all it is. Fleeting, and I don't give it any more thought. I have never lost that fear of what alcohol did to me. I never want to feel that way again.

So the answer is yes, it just becomes normal not to drink. It doesn't require much thought

Thanks for that, kinda makes it all worthwhile.

Its always been a worry of mine that I'll feel like I'm constantly missing out but reading what said gives me a lot of hope. Thanks very much!

I never feel like I'm missing out because I don't drink anymore. I know I can't drink socially. The tough times are usually when it is a social gathering of people I don't know well, but it is generally only the first few minutes that I feel awkward (and that's because I'm not a very social, chatty person by nature).
I always think (omg, if I were drinking I'd be a sobbing mess in the corner or dancing on tables). Never again. :-)

The "missing out" thing goes away. I think I am still noticing changes at 16plus months. The sense of freedom is priceless. I am also far more able to handle "stress" (which used to send me back to the bottle).

It gets easier and it gets better.

I'm 6 months sober and I very rarely find a situation in which alcohol is being consumed difficult now. I would say this happened 2 months ago, perhaps more, so keep going - it will definitely be the norm soon.

That's interesting as it was stress that drove me to drink in the first place!

Its weird how the crutch we use to cope could actually be the cause of the underlying problem. I was drinking heavily because I could not cope with stress at work and I had depression. It was my way to escape and become numb for a few hours. My head now feels a lot clearer and my spirit in general has been lifted since I gave up the drink.

My biggest issue at the moment is having to explain why I'm not drinking. The two times it has come up so far I've not really had a negative response. I've managed to brush it off with comments such as 'Im giving it a rest for a while' or 'i'm on a health kick'. There will be times in the future where I will no doubt get the third degree from friends or relatives. I expect there will be some people who will just want to be nosey and pry into my private life. Not looking forward to having to justify myself at all. My reasons for giving up drinking are personal to me and I'm uncomfortable with being labelled by people. I have my over-bearing sister in law coming to visit this Saturday, I've already conjured up my "I'm on anti-biotic's chest infection excuse"!

At 14 months for me, Sneeker, it is much like what you described with you and cigarettes. It's not so much as a craving anymore, just a thought that disappears when I become aware of it and mindful of it. I see it for what it is and it's gone. I can say that weeks go by without a single one now.

I was sorely tested a few weeks ago, on a camping fishing trip - the same people, place and time of year where I first drank all day every day for a week, about 15 years ago. Eye openers before breakfast, rum all day, and wine with dinner and scotch till oblivion, for four days straight. That appeared as a craving and a strong one too. But I didn't drink, I couldn't really. Failing at sobriety now is out of the question.

Thoughts, memories, urges, cravings, they are all the same to me now. Empty of any force to make me do anything. I can only accept them without getting frantic or panicky. They disappear, and I remain. I will prevail because I may. Timshel.

.

Well done you, that must have been some test.

I can relate to those sort of weekends myself. Every year me and the boys go away to watch horse racing. Dont get me wrong we always had a blast but boy did we drink, pretty much non stop. I used to feel terrible for a whole week after.

I'm hoping I can suggest something different to my friends this year. Instead of watching sport I think we need to do sport! I'm quite looking forward to playing tennis or golf and then having a relaxing evening and decent nights sleep!

Sneeker, wrapped up in those thoughts are some beliefs of yours that might not be true. Unpack this and see if you can find out what they are. Do you believe that everyone cares about you drinking with them? Do you believe that people will react negatively to you not drinking? Do you believe that you have to justify your choice whether to drink? Are these beliefs true? What does it mean if these beliefs are not true?

I don't know if you have these beliefs or not, but even if you do, they aren't reason to drink. You know what to do simply because you have the power to choose.

I go through my days without the obsession to drink. Does that feel normal? No. What it feels like is a blessing, every day.

Two years sober won't make up for 35 years of drinking. But I haven't felt this "Normal" in years.

Five weeks is awesome. Stay the course. Work on your recovery. Don't slack off just because things feel "normal" and you'll be okay.

No, at 2 years it did not feel "totally" normal. But I drink for a lot of years, like nearly 40, so I was OK with that... At 4 years, I can say that it feels totally normal.

Do you ever doubt yourself?

No

Do you ever feel the urge to drink?

No. No urges. And lately, there are very few moments where I notice anything. Most of those are when I am around others who drink. Those moments pass quickly and painlessly.

So yea, sober becomes normal. Be patient, it happens. . Live for, and don't drink, just for today.

14 years here, and it has felt very normal not to drink for at least 13 of those years.

And really--think about it. We aren't masochists here. If it didn't get better, if life didn't improve, we wouldn't be here, we'd have gone back to drinking.

But life improves immeasurably, as you'll find too. Hang in there.

Hi sneeker Pipparina's response is how I feel too. Not sure when it happened, but at some point I stopped being sorry for myself - stopped feeling like I was missing out.

I remember the first few months obsessing over not drinking. It was on my mind all the time - I worried how I'd get through the holidays, how I'd face upsetting things, etc. The first year, with all the triggers a year can bring, was the hardest. Now it barely crosses my mind, and I can't believe I'm saying that. I once had it by my side at all times.

Glad you brought it up, and hope the answers are helping encourage you.

I don't know really when it shifted, but at almost 4 years sober I never think about it. The life I've built around my sobriety and recovery simply doesn't include anything having to do with my old life, and honestly it's become effortless at this point and probably for the past couple of years. Granted, I got pregnant, had a baby (who will be 3 next month) so there's that distraction.. but I love my life now and I feel very secure in my recovery all of the time.

3 yrs sober and it is normal. Differant life and sooooooo much better. I still have thoughts of alcohol but they are gone as soon as they arrive. I am still terrified of the way my life was and I hope I never forget that. Still go to a lot of AA meetings and work with others. As someone else said, if it was not a lot better why would we do it?

Thanks for all reply's, really inspiring stuff.

Lots of the words written make so much sense and give a great deal of hope. I guess the resounding comment has to be" If it didn't get better, if life didn't improve, we wouldn't be here, we'd have gone back to drinking". So true.

I feel quite liberated at the moment. The other night I was planning a night out to a restaurant with a friend. It suddenly struck me that I could drive and did not have to arrange a taxi or look for bus times! The night out only cost me ?15 because firstly I only drank diet coke and secondly I did not have to pay for a taxi home! It was also nice to able to go home when I wanted and for a change I got home at a reasonable hour. I had a great night and I woke up in the morning without a hangover. This same night 2 months ago would have been so different.

There is definitely a feeling of calm around me at the moment, almost spiritual.

Thanks again for all your comments, they really help!

Yes! The relief you'll feel from the 'burden' of keeping up a drinking lifestyle will be huge. You're doing great.

I guess that I worry what people will think of me. I am also not comfortable with people questioning me and I dont like the idea of people talking about me. I don't like labels either because I think we are all different. I don't like the word alcoholic because for me it has so many negative connotations. I'd be embarrassed and ashamed if people knew/thought I was an alcoholic. Sneeker by sneeker by nature I'm afraid. I've kept this drinking a secret for so long that I almost feel like I have gotten away with it and I don't want people to think any less of me if I come clean and admit or announce I have a problem.

Does that make sense?

Sneeker, what a great thread idea! It is really good to hear from people that have done it successfully that it becomes easier over time, and sobriety is their "new normal". I needed to read that, because early in recovery you feel like all you do is think about drinking and it gets old fast.

I think as far as people asking you about it, I agree, you don't need to go into too much personal stuff with anyone. You can give the "health kick" answer and leave it at that. If someone really probes and ask if you're an alcoholic (which I hope they wouldn't) you can say "no, but I don't want to go down that road so I'm taking it easy" or something similar. It's no one's business but your own. You will find there are people you can discuss it honestly with, but you choose who they are, don't let anyone intimidate you.

Great advice.

I get the feeling (maybe wrongly) that some people feel the need to announce they are recovering alcoholics, which is fine if you are confident enough to say that. I am by nature quite a shy person and I hate fuss.

When I was drinking heavily I used to go out of my way to get others to drink with me. Even when people said they did not want to drink i'd be like 'come on you can have a couple!' I'm afraid I might meet someone like I used to be!

I must have been a real pain in the butt!

Everyday I feel more at ease with my new way of life and I'm sure that one day I'll be totally comfortable with it. I guess when that day comes I wont care what people say or think.

i would much rather let people have their own opinions of me being sober than to show them how i am drunk. if anyne has a problem with me being an alcoholic living sober, then they have a problem.
