Hezbollah possibly behind drone shot down in Israel, report says

Hezbollah is possibly responsible for sending a drone into Israel territory, which was shot down by the Israeli air force on Saturday morning, Ynet news agency reported Saturday evening.

Ynet quoted an unnamed source as saying that "Hezbollah launched this drone. It is even possible that Iranians activated its launch and guidance system, and it is apparently of Iranian manufacture."

"The launching of such a craft over such a distance requires advanced means that Hezbollah does not possess up to now," Ynet added.

The Israeli air force shot down an unarmed and unidentified drone on Saturday after it entered the country's airspace from the Mediterranean Sea near the Gaza Strip, an army spokesperson reported.

"An unmanned aerial vehicle [UAV] was identified penetrating Israeli airspace [Saturday] morning, and was intercepted by the IAF at approximately 10 a.m. [0800 GMT]," a military spokesperson said.

However, when asked by AFP about speculation concerning Hezbollah and Iranian involvement, an army spokesperson was unable to confirm or deny the veracity of the claims.

In July 2006, the Israeli military shot down an unarmed drone operated by Lebanon's Shiite Hezbollah movement over the Jewish state's territorial waters.

Another pilotless Hezbollah aircraft succeeded in overflying part of northern Israel on April 12, 2005 without being downed.
