It's a story of surprising recovery that's playing out at other Japanese automakers, but particularly at Nissan.
CEO Carlos Ghosn called it "miraculous" on Friday, ahead of the disaster's anniversary.
The maker of the March subcompact and the Infiniti luxury brands had record sales year of 4.67 million vehicles in 2011. That was up 14 percent from the previous year.
But it's not all plain sailing for Japan Inc. and its automakers. Executives and analysts say they now have to get to grips with more perennial problems such as the strong yen.
