State GOP Has New Political, Communications Directors

The state Republican Party today announced the hiring of a new communications director and political director.

The party is turning to David Laska, a speechwriter and policy researcher for Chairman Ed Cox, to be his new chief spokesman. Cox also announced that Joe Uddo, a party organizer originally from Louisiana, will take the title of political director.

?Joe and David were integral parts of our operation during the 2012 election cycle,? said Chairman Cox. ?Joe?s work in the field helped us send six Republicans back to Congress despite a 63% statewide vote share for President Obama and David?s writing and policy research fueled our message all year. I am thrilled that both Joe and David have agreed to take on additional responsibilities as we continue to elect Republicans and spread our pro-growth message to every corner of New York.?

Their jobs likely won?t be the easiest in a state that is dominated by Democrats, who control all statewide offices. The GOP last won a statewide race in 2002, when then-Gov. George Pataki was re-elected to a third term.

Republicans in 2012 retained some of their freshman House seats, most notably Reps. Chris Gibson and Tom Reed, and even unseated Rep. Kathy Hochul in the deeply conservative western New York district.

But Republicans failed to defeat Rep. Bill Owens in the North Country, Tim Bishop on Long Island and longtime Rep. Louise Slaughter in the Rochester area. They also lost Reps. Anne Marie Buerkle and Nan Hayworth.

The party?s last lever of power remains the state Senate, which is now controlled by a governing coalition of Republicans and five independent Democrats.
